Hi All,

The book for my 23 G80 states LL-12FE or LL-17FE+ 0w-30 oil is required. I cannot find any non-BMW oil that matches those requirements. The closest was a Liqui Moly with the right viscosity but not the proper LL spec. What are y’all using?

Anyone? I plan to do oil changes every 5000 miles instead of just relying on the regular maintenance intervals.

When I do my own oil this coming spring, I plan on using the standard BMW LL-17 0W-30. I have seen quite a few people going left or right on the weight with different brands, but if prices are near the same, I don’t see a reason to change.

Did bmw do a different LL designation again? 😂

My 22 asked for 0w-30 LL01FE per US manual. The euro manual asks for LL04 due to OPF.

Last change I used Liquimoly 4200 LL04 5W-30.

Might seem a stupid question but does anyone know why the oil spec changes on OPF vs non-OPF cars? I mean, there is no physical connection between the OPFs and the engine... Is it because of the extra heat the OPFs generate and can travel up the exhaust?

If I remember correctly, it was that certain chemicals in LL01 degrade the opf filters. It’s super scientificy so I just read the blurbs. If you want an in-depth answer, just google ll01 vs. ll04.

I think you're overthinking this. Just go to the dealer and pay for the oil change. Better yet if you have a new vehicle, service is free for 3yrs in the US. The car has a built-in oil change sensor. If you're so worried that 10k miles or 1/yr is too long, send your oil to Blackstone to get tested.

I wanna chim in not entirely related. I’ve worked for many auto manufacturers and seen how manufacturers will run a specific weight oil for epa fuel economy and not for the best engine lubricantion. Examples

The first few years bmw did the 4cy it took 0w30 and newer cars same PN went to 0w20.

Ford runs 5w20 in the 5.0 mustangs but if you take your car to the track it’s supposed to have 5w30 in it while on the track but needs to go back to 5w20 for street use.

I ran 0w40 in my N54 from new till 135k before an accident no issues.

I ran 0w40 in my N63 to 156k no issues. Both cars were 5w30 or 0w30.

I ran 0w40 in my s55 m3 it calls for 0w30 but I remember seeing references to 0w40. It ran strong till 86k no issues and I’m hard on all my cars.

I can’t confirm yet but the s58 motor calling for 0w30 is for epa and fuel economy. I’m sure 0w40 is the better choice but we won’t know till either bmw comes out with alternate oil lists like ford and other manufacturers do or a oil expert chimes in.

Many thanks for your perspective! I too ran Mobile 1 0w40 mostly on my M54 and N62 without issues until it lost LL01 certification. Now running Castrol 5w30 LL01. All I'm after is something that'll not harm our engines... I don't know why it's so hard to get BWM-approved compatible oils for our cars.

My dealer changes the oil every 25k kms with BMW LL01FE 0w30. But i plan to change the oil every 7.5K-10K kms with Shell Helix 5w40/Pennzoil Euro Platinum 5w40

I use the FCP oil change kits every 5K alternating with the BMW 10K services. In the long run it's cheap insurance. There are 1000's of rabbit hole discussions on chat boards regarding motor oil specs and what to use. I like to do KISS oil changes.....Bimmerworld has a good write up on BMW motor oils and recommendations across BMW generation engines.

Check with Redline.
They say their 0w30 meets the requirements.
Amsoil, on the other hand, says their oil does not.

Red Line 10W40 High Performance seems to be recommended for normal climate with track days and performance driving. But that was for the older motors and the 5W30 Euro spec is what we need?

Anybody have experience with it?

Even my service manager at the dealer was telling me he doesn't really understand why BMW is using 0w30 oil, and agreed that it's too thin...

Interesting...my 23 G80 still calls for Longlife-01 FE. I first checked on the Driver's Guide app and than went to the physical owner's manual and both references Longlife-01 FE. When did your production start? Mine started in February.
