What’s the max mileage you’d go before break in service?

Currently 300 miles on the odometer. Was thinking about visiting family tomorrow and it’s 1250 miles round trip, which would put me around 1550-1600 miles before I could take the vehicle in for the run-in service.

Yes, 1200 miles is ideal, but is 1550 too many?

I’ve read through some old post and I’ve seen 2000 miles tossed around a couple times as the max.

What do y’all think?

Your car will be mechanically fine if you wait til you get back from your trip to do the service. That shouldn't even be a worry. Now, would BMW possibly bring it up as a reason to deny payment if you were to have a warranty claim down the road? Possibly. Unlikely though.

Got ya. A few minutes ago I read an article about a 500 mile grace period after the 1200 miles. Looks like all would be well as long as it’s taken care of before 1700 miles.

I will tell you from a dealer perspective that it could cost your trade in value. If you exceed the break in period by over 300 miles your vehicle will be ineligible for a future CPO program. This could cause a BMW dealer to offer less on trade due to marketability issues.

That’s great to know. I’ll probably only have the vehicle for a year or two and want to maintain the highest trade value I can.

I was nervous when I dropped mine off at just 50 miles over the 1200. Tech manager said it would be ok, but I was still nervous.

I did mine at 1575 miles. Dealer didn’t even say anything. When I wanted something earlier they said they didnt have any openings for service and told me not to cross 2000 miles. I don’t know what Higgy_CSL is true. Is there a directive from BMW about this ? No one even mentioned about my mileage when I did mine.

When a M car is enrolled in the CPO program it will be rejected if the miles are too far past the proper break in service. A knowledgeable used car manager will look at this before placing a value on a trade in and will not give top value if lack of proper break in will discredit the CPO eligibility.

A service advisor will most likely have no clue about this, thus the reason they would not tell you about this potential issue.

So what constitutes a proper break in service mileage ? Is there a directive from BMW about the max mileage or is this just arbitrary? Thats where the issue lies. I wouldnt trust a dealership to give me the best trade in value of any car due to inate bias, so outside of the trade in value, where is the red line reg denial of warranty etc by BMW. Thats what we r trying to find out. There doesnt seem to be anything consistent here in the forum. As a dealer, do u happen to have something thats directly from BMW ?

As I stated in my previous post… 300 miles past break in service will make an M car ineligible for a CPO program. You can say what ever you want about a dealer, but that is the only place that is able to put a manufacturer sponsored CPO warranty on a car. So I would try to limit the possibility of hurting my value from them by making my car void of that very important resale ability.

This should really be well known and communicated for every sale. I'm kind of shocked BMW doesn't mandate every sales rep read a sentence stating this upon bill of sale.

I personally would probably never consider a private party sale because it's too much work and not worth it to make up the tax difference selling to a dealership. Losing that value could cost thousands of dollars.

I suggest a sticky for this thread

I agree with you about having the CA communicate with buyers the max mileage but I wouldnt lose sleep that I would lose money if I dont trade my car to a dealership. Sold 3 cars so far and dealerships have quoted me the lowest trade in value even if accounted for the sales tax difference. So its not the end of the world. With so many 3 party options now available to sell your car, private party isnt the only option if the dealership isnt offering you top dollars. But again, I live in a state with lower sales tax than some others so your results may vary. Plus CPO are usually less than 3 yr old cars so of u r gonna keep them longer, they arent eligible for them anyways.

I know your keeping the car short term it sounds like but I'm a sticker for maintenance items like this and I would be all stressed out going that far over the mileage whether it's okay or not lol. Even if I only keep my cars short term I like to keep up on items like this just in case I keep it longer. You just never know.

Never went over 1000 miles on any performance car I've owned, and that number is ~ 25. Had mine done at exactly 1000. Wouldn't do it any earlier, but definitely not longer than maybe 1200-1250. And that is only because 95% of my driving is highway--or deserted, open roads...

Break in service is 1200 miles, get it done at 1200 miles. /end

edit: there was a posted video that everyone should have viewed if you own a G8x.

You are risking severe powertrain damage and a massive drop in the resale value

Thanks for all the input. I’m postponing the trip and will have the run-in service done at 1200 miles.

You will probably be fine (even for resale) if you went up to 1500 miles.

That said, I did my M3 run-in service at 1072 miles so what do I know?

Got ya. The trip was going to put me closer to 1600 miles, so I figured better safe than sorry (for resale).
