Junk Title by Mistake

Curious to see if I am actually the ONLY ONE in the world to have this problem.

Leased a brand new BMW in 2021 April. I renewed my license plate 2022 Feb with no problem.
Only in 2023 April when I tried to renew my plate and I couldn’t. Found out I was given a Junk Title in 2022 March and it was in New Jersey. (I have never been out of state)

I have so far contacted, I guess everyone?
- Motor Vehicle in NJ (told me to talk to the police)
- 3 different Police Department in NJ (Told me to talk to the Motor Vehicle)
- CarFax
- My own BMW dealer (can’t help)
- BMW USA (said to be working on it but it’s been a year with no progress)
- My Lawyer (don’t have a case against anyone)
- Ask almost everyone that I know that’s working in the auto industry (Never heard of my case)

I mean, it’s easy, I just return the bmw at lease end, but meaning I will have zero equity. I only drove 20k miles lol, car still looking good so far.

Anyone?

First off, I’m sorry to hear about all of the frustration. This sounds like a nightmare and wish you the best.

I’m trying to understand this better though. You leased a NEW vehicle (ie you were the only owner and it had 0 miles on it) and unbeknownst to you it already had a salvage title?

I don’t understand how that’s even possible.

I leased it brand new. It’s just brand new when I leased it in 2021, nothing wrong. Somehow, I was slapped with a junk title in 2022.

I actually try to look into other brands for my next lease, trying to give them my lease as early return. They saw my bmw lease with junk title, they all said bye lol

If you’re still in the lease period you’ll have to ride it out and turn in the car to the dealer you leased from. Then it’s their problem again, right?

This had to have been a mishap at some point in the system. Definitely confused for sure

"Only in 2023 April when I tried to renew my plate and I couldn’t"

you mean...just be without the car and keep paying the lease payments until it becomes "their problem again"??

Craaaaap…so the title thing prevents tag renewal. Nobody wants to be illegal and also pulled over showing title problems. That could ask for disaster.

My next step would be to go visit my local congressperson or political committee member’s office, and to very kindly ask the person at the desk for help (again…the person at the desk is your gatekeeper…be extremely kind). It’s amazing the power they have.

Is your drivers license TX or NJ?
Was the title supposed to be TX or NJ?
Better trying to understand the mistake…

It does prevent tag removal but the DMV in California let me renew it by having a temp tag.
Basically yes, it’s that easy for me to just wait till lease end, give them back the car, it’s not my problem anymore.

I have no idea how they do the calculation, but I believe, without a junk title, I may actually have some equity on the car that I could use for the next lease. Now? Zero. So I kinda see it as a loss on my end.

I’m in CA actually.
From my understanding or guessing, someone in NJ used my vin on another vehicle illegally, and messed it up.

Similar happened to me also. Is your actual title 'clean' tho? Meaning the physical title doesn't show as JUNK? In my case Carfax reported a JUNK title but the title I had in hand was clean so Carfax worked with the DMV and removed the JUNK status from their report.

My car is actually lease, ending next month. Got it clean, but end up dirty.

Carfax said they got a report from NJ, so they are basing it on them. I have to otherwise get a document from them that it’s incorrect to remove the junk title.

DMV said they can’t do anything since they based it on carfax.
