What are people using for their M1/M2 preset settings?

I've got a few months to get ready for my car to arrive, might as well start considering this. I know that a few of the Youtubers have commented on their preferred settings, but would be interested to hear what settings folks are using and the reasoning. You can obviously go from full comfort to full racetrack, but guessing most folks have two settings in-between.

The car defaults to "full comfort" every time you start it, and honestly that's my default mode anyway because I'm old. So M1 is set for sport engine just to open up the exhaust valves, and M2 is set for track, with MDM on and suspension set to track or sport or whatever the stiffest setting is. I leave the steering and braking in comfort mode, because it's the best.

I never turn DSC totally off (unless I'm on the track) because there are just too many unknowns on the street.

I drive the car basically always in sport+ mode…I define my M1/M2 setup like a dry and rain mode. M2 is everything on sharpest setting and M1 is just a small difference, where steering and brake is in comfort and dsc on

Are you saying that you can bypass the default setting by pressing one of the M buttons twice?

Yes, brake pressed but do not start the car, and the press your buttons (they way I have my stability set up it requires a double press) and then once you start the car it will be in M1 or M2 already.

AFAIK, you need to press the button twice if any of your settings have MDM on or DSC off. Basically the second press is to confirm that the nannies are reduced/off, I assume to avoid you accidentally hitting it and getting into trouble when you did not expect it.
e.g. I have MDM on M2 so need to press M2 button twice to activate that setting.

I did not know this, now I know how to start my car in sport instead of efficient to have the valves open.

M1: sport engine, sport chassis, D3, all else default
M2: sport+ engine, sport+ chassis, sport steering, sport brakes, S3, 4WD sport, DSC off (launch control)

M1 is set up to mimic the "sport" setting on my 2018 M2, for a fun corner on a vacant public road or when passing on the highway.

M2 is for when I did my first ever launch of any car ever on a deserted New Mexico highway ... jesus christ this car is fast.

Isn't there a button on the console to open the exhaust valves? (I don't have my car yet) Or are you set up to open them before starting the car?

By doing what I did/wrote above you can have them opened pre start- or you can use the button individually.

In reality, as shown in the exhaust section here, the valves still are not fully open unless under load.

I have a question. On the F80 we were able to program which HUD displayed for each M mode. It looks like that's not longer possible, correct?

Don’t have the car yet, but there are so many freaking acronyms…so take it easy on me.

For transmission settings: it seems there are two variables…S holds gears longer and downshifts more aggressively than D, and 3 shifts faster between gears than 1. So least aggressive gear holding/downshifting with smoothest shifts is d1, and longest gear holds and most aggressive downshift with fastest actual shifts regardless of smoothness is s3? I remember a thread a long time ago about someone figuring out the 1-3 part and finding a huge difference, just not sure how it all works together.

Engine: changes responsiveness to throttle inputs only? Or does this have some interaction with how long gears held etc.?

I am also confused between mdm and awd sport. I get the awd sport is more rear biased than regular awd setting. So what does mdm do (other than change 5pm dash display and heads up display)? Does mdm just control when limited-slip kicks in? So we get to choose: how much rwd bias the awd system has, and independent of that how quickly (if at all) the traction control the kicks in to prevent a slide? Also, the awd settings are only in idrive settings, while mdm is center console button?

Chassis/steering are straightforward.

Does the braking setting really change that much?

From what I gather from the coding discussions, the hud display is binary: regular or mdm. And based on the coding threads, it does not seem like anyone has been able to get the mdm hud independent of mdm being active. I do t have my car, but it seems the answer is: if you can link mdm to a M button, then yes, you can control it.

It's not linked to MDM. The HUD is toggled with the M Mode button on the console rather than the M1/M2 buttons. The "Road" mode, without the tach, has all your safety systems active. You'll then have 1 or two more modes (Sport and Track...you get Track if you bought M Drive Professional) that toggles the HUD to showing the tach and also reduces what the nannies do. I don't have Track since I don't have M Drive Professional, but I think it turns off the iDrive Display.

Wait...ugh. now I have to figure out how AWD settings interplay with both MDM and M mode? Why do they make it so complicated. Haha

Thanks for the clarification re:M mode and HUD as opposed to MDM.
