Additional pictures for the wiring. From the shift knob, the Red/Purple goes to the Black/Red and the Brown goes to the Black on the connector. From the connector, the Black/Red goes to the Green and the Black goes to the Brown/Black on the harness.

Retrofit F10 M5 Illuminated Shift Knob to G8X

Let there be light , finally after few hours of working in super small space I was able to install the Illuminated shift knob on my G80. I was able to hook to positive cable that gets controlled by the dimming switch. I absolutely love the install.

Unfortunately it was midnight by the time I finished everything so I forgot to take a picture from the wiring harness that I T-Tapped to. I chose the wiring harness to the right of the center console (immediately right of the shifter). This was much easier to tap in to honestly. I tapped to the green wire (positive) and I actually chose the cigarette lighter's ground wire(negative) for ease of accessibility. Thanks to mzcp help and detailed pictures. I even bothered the poor guy on DM many times lol… thanks again for all your help

Nice!
I was sitting on the passenger side the whole time during the install, so I never got to see a harness to the right of the shifter.
I'm gonna have to see if I want to rewire it to the one you tapped into.
Mine lights up in tandem with the emergency button, so basically every time I open the vehicle.

I regret not thinking to take a picture since it was midnight unfortunately. I have the video of dimmer working with the shift knob but I can't attach a video here unfortunately

Yeah not a lot of room to maneuver in there.

You see that was actually the wire I had found on my diagram but I didn't take apart my console to confirm.

Nice!
How are you able to switch out the boot so easily?
Looking at the inside, it looks like the boot is wedged between ultrasonic welded plastic pieces.

Did you just break the tabs?
If so, what are you using to hold the boot against the knob?

Thanks!

Just break the tabs. Pry the knob from the base on top of the plastic ring. There is only one tab that will break easy.
You don't need the plastic ring when you reinstall. The knob locks in the shifter.

Thanks for the tip.
So the boot stays put against the knob when reinstalled?

I did not use a cable tie to secure the boot collar to the shifter. I might do that later but so far I don't see any significant gap between them.

I see. I guess the step on the shifter shaft holds the boot collar in place.
Thanks for confirming this.
