Hot plastic smell?
I've noticed a hot (not burning / Smokey) plastic smell a few times after I have been out driving and pull the car into the garage. Starts after it's been sitting for a few minutes and then goes away after a few more. I've pulled the hood and can't locate it. Have also looked under the car to see if I picked something up but nothing. I'm familiar with the petroleum based smells engines give off for the first few hundred miles and mine did that but that smell is gone now. This is different.
Anyone else?

All brand new BMWs seem to do this. I’ve noticed it after test driving many different cars in their range. I think it’s just a natural part of breaking it in

I have something similar… (recently had covid, lost my sense of smell and it recently started coming back) at first i thought because the weather was heating up that maybe the brakes were running hot or it had been there all along, who knows but i notice it more and more now. Have you taken to dealer yet?

Sounds like the typical cosmoline smell from the new cars. Couple hundred miles and the smell should go away. A lot of it is from like the area near the engine getting warm and melting a bit from engine heat. Like in the hood crevices and the engine rails and fender areas.

Smelled this today in garage post break in svc, but right after I did some hard pulls slid ass end out coming off second and then few mins later engaged launch control and launched 6MT. It's definitely a melting smell part of breaking in. I never run an M hard before engine shows 210, but after its warm, I have no problem keeping that motor toasty. Lol. Smell is offensive be glad when it goes away after hard runs.

This is pretty normal...Porsche is notorious for its burning "plastic" smell during break-in. Especially after a really "spirited" drive. Never noticed it on any of my BMW's...probably was more noticeable on my Porsche because of the engine being behind the driver and not the front.
After the break-in period after racking up some miles, you'll probably start to notice the crayon smell inside the cabin too.

You guys are actually complaining about the "New Car Smell" - tisk tisk tisk..
I have to cough up $4.99, at the gas station counter, for the same exact benefit, on my 2016.. Enjoy it while it last, that burning plastic odor is completely normal and will eventually subside, after about 3,000 miles or so.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_car_smell |
