6MT first gear engagement issue
Hi guys,
I just hit 2k miles and I love the car. However, I have been experiencing one main issue. Every so often when I am in neutral engaging into 1st gear it is almost as if the shifter gets stuck in between neutral and 1st. A weird clicking / resistance feeling can be felt and just this morning the car snapped very abruptly back into neutral since the car was not fully engaged into 1st even though it said 1st gear on my cluster! Any one else experiencing this issue when going from N - 1st?! I feel like it should not be this hard to put the car into 1st gear! |

I get a false neutral occasionally too. Happens when stopped and when moving. Also is sometimes notchy into 2nd. Do you have a clutch stop installed?

There is sometimes a little resistance N->1 but you should press through it to fully engage 1. Maybe you are not pressing the clutch in far enough and getting too much resistance in the stick? That's where a clutch stop should help so you can always press the clutch to the stop instead of guessing on the engagement point in the long travel.

My last two BMWs were manual and, on occasion, would refuse to shift into first from neutral. It was not something I could reproduce at will and happened infrequently (a few times a year). Those transmissions didn't give me any other problems, so I don't think there was a fundamental issue with them - just "the way it was". The dealer is unlikely to do anything unless you can reproduce the issue.
When it happens, go back to neutral, let out the clutch, put the clutch back in, and try to get into first again. If you're on a hill, let the car roll a few inches before trying to get back into gear. If that doesn't work, you can launch in second gear. Charles

That’s because it is the same transmission.

BMWs (and other Getrag users) have always been like that for me. It just takes a bit of effort and sometimes some help.
A clutch stop won't do anything for you. Just press the clutch pedal all the way in. What I do, depending on how I feel is: - neutral, let out clutch, push in clutch, shift to first - put in second, then first - neutral, let out clutch, give a little throttle blip, push in clutch, shift to first (also known as double-clutching) You can waste your time taking it to the dealer if you want. I'd be surprised if they will do anything based on lack of comparables, and that it's basically "normal" operation. These ain't no Honda. And it will get a bit better as you get more miles on the car.

I have 700mi on my G80 and I’m getting this issue as well. I also have had trouble getting it into 3rd while driving like a grandpa.
Any updates on the 1st gear issue? |

for what its worth, my car seemed to be a little more difficult to get into gear until just recently (around 700 miles). It could just be something needing to wear in. I would drive the car to about 2500 miles and then take it to the dealer if still having issues.
