Cigarette lighter 12 volt plug not working?

The 12 volt plug by the cup holders hasn't worked since I got the car. I thought it was the adapter I was using but a new adapter didn't fix the problem. apparently there is a common fuse that goes out that takes 15 seconds to fix? anyone know where that fuse is on this car? I could just take it to the dealer but have to drive the car out of town tomorrow and would like it to work.

It's not a fuse. The receptacle has to be replaced. I had the same problem--it's too large for most plugs like a radar detector. Known problem. Takes about 5 minutes to put the new one in--after they order it. They had a fix before that just replaced the screw at the bottom. It worked for me with a piece of plastic hose jammed into the receptacle until they got the part. Had it replaced at 1200 mile service.

So is the problem that it's too long for the plugs to reach the bottom of? The plug seems to fit quite securely side to side. I saw something else somewhere where someone jammed some aluminum foil into it. What does the rubber tubing do? The temporary fix is something they have to do, not something I can do. I guess until then I will keep using the slower charging USBC port.

Generally there is a part number on your service receipt, do you happen to have it?

Didn't show part number on receipt, probably because part was in Parts Dept before I got there as they ordered it when I took the car back because of that and the XM not working. As I understand it, the first fix was a new screw--longer. Once that was put in, the plug worked ok fully to the right, but not in the center/left. Definite play in it. I put a small piece of rubber tubing (non-conductive of course) in to hold the plug tight. Worked fine, looked tacky. The new piece keeps the plug firmly in place--no play, and probably has a longer screw on the bottom. I was told it was a known problem, just like XM not being up--at least on my M4C.

So I've been to the dealer twice for this now and they say there is nothing they can do for it. Their plugs work but my three do not. I showed them your post and they said they don't have a clue about that part. Can you tell me what dealer you took your car to and maybe I can call them or put my dealer and them in touch and see if they can figure something out? Also do you know, does it matter if the plug I'm trying to put in is a fast charging adapter or not?

What about my dad?

USB isn't the problem. That's what I'm currently having to use. The 12V is what I want to use so I can fast charge.

To further my question a bit...

I talked to the service director at the dealer yesterday who said that he looked into it and "there is only one 12V receptacle part number BMW has listed". My CA gave me one of the BMW branded 12V adaptors, which does work, but only slow charges at the same speed as the USB port so it's not any help. Below is the BMW adaptor on the left, the Quickcharge 3.0 adaptor that works in my Jeep and an older cable that also works in my Jeep. Neither of the latter 2 work in my BMW. The metal contacts on the sides are in different places although I wouldn't think that would matter since the whole receptacle is metal. All 3 fit plenty secure in the hole. No play at all on any of them so it doesn't appear to be a size issue.

Ideas?

My dealer has ordered a replacement part for it using a G20 tsb. We'll see if that works.

That may just be the longer screw in the bottom. That was the "fix" that didn't solve the issue. Would work, if you pushed the plug all the way to the right--too loose in socket. I jammed a piece of rubber tubing to secure the RD plug and it worked until the new socket came in. Had it replaced at 1200 mile service: works fine now. But it was a new socket. Took about 5 minutes to replace.

This is a whole new socket. Not a screw. Still waiting for parts.

Do you have a link to that TSB? Tried googling it, but didn't come up with much. Curious what it involves. What problem are you having with yours. Just not working? Does the adaptor seem loose in it as vetteflier had?

Ok, resolution for anyone that searches and finds this thread.

SIB 61 01 20, updated socket

Installed 61 34 7 947 771 :B1-Plug-in socket

The socket is definitely deeper and works now with my fast charging adaptor

Thanks for sharing this. I had the same issue on my G80 and my wife's G06. I was using the USB adapter as a fix. I had the same bmw branded adapter that's working. So I thought BMW wouldn't fix the issue since it works with their adapter.

The bulletin says replace screw. But the part number you listed is a new socket. Did you replace both? Or did you just do the screw? If the dealer strictly follows the bulletin, I don't see them order a new socket. Thanks!

They replaced the whole socket. The new one is much deeper. I'm not officially sure about the screw but the socket is definitely different.

I just saw this thread and I realized my lighter doesnt work with my cell phone rapid charger on the 2022... but it does work with the mobility kit (tested it).

My rapid charger works just fine in my R8, Porsche, M8, etc

I guess Ill have the dealer review it when I do the 1200 mile break in service.

Hopefully your dealer sucks less than mine did with solving the problem.
