May 2021 update on options restrictions for the US market

May 2021
Option 5AZ - Laserlights is Restricted on all 4 Series models including M4. (supply shortage, option may be removed from orders.)

Option 688 - HK Soundsystem is Restricted on all models ( excludes where it's standard ) due to supply shortage.

Ugh this is disappointing, might have to cancel my order I think!

I wonder if M3 is also affected by the Laserlight shortage

Is this straight from BMW?

If the laser light restriction is going to affect the M3, I may pull the plug for now.

Maybe BMW shouldn't have been so nice by giving out laser lights to early adopters with no exec package...

Yes, Straight from BMW. I don't see the LaserLights restriction on the M3 Weird becauses M3 & M4 its the same lights same front end on both cars.

To the best of my knowledge and from what I can see on my end, it only mentions the M4 under laserlight restriction.

Thanks for the insight. Looks like there's still some hope for us M3 buyers then.

I'm in the UK, where HK comes standard, so if I read it correctly sounds like it will continue to be offered

Yes thats what it says. Also I should have been more clear, thats my fault...What I posted is for the US Market. I have no idea, if this the same thing in other markets or not.

The HK Sound restriction would not apply for M3/M4 as it comes standard.

Where's the source for these restrictions?

This would be a deal killer for me on my M4 order as well. Or maybe force me to consider and M3 if it's not affecting that model.

Ditto on the above question OP, what's the source on this?

Yea I know. Thats exactly what I said. M3 & M4 have the exact same front end. I guess since they are made at 2 different plants..that may be the reason..same reason that you can get some individual paints on M3 but not on the M4.

Interesting development. I'm really getting anxious to see the 2022 order guides to see what (if any) changes are made to the options or packages.

What do you take their "may be" comment to mean? Will the fact that they are unavailable be clearly listed in the order guides (i.e. removed from the Exec package), and buyers will know up front that they can or can't get it? Or is it a crap shoot and could cars suddenly be delivered without it while some get it? Like how they removed 5AS from the HEA cars without telling dealers?

Can you translate? What does "Restricted" mean? It might randomly not show up on the car with an offsetting credit?

Yeah not sure what to make of this post. My build has the lights specified and if HK isn't available what would possibly show up? I don't think I've ever seen anything less than HK on a current generation M car.

HK is fine as it states it will not affect standard equipped cars.

I feel like it would get knocked off before it goes 150 and you could then accept/reject. The HEA's missing 5AS they could get away with because none were "customer sold" so any customer buying it would see the "missing 5AS" and credit before buying. If you've submitted a customer sold order and they subsequently change it, without your input, I feel like that would be a pretty crappy thing to do, even just from a PR standpoint. I would be PISSED if I'd waited months on a car, it shows up without laser lights, and then they give you some nominal credit.

Who knows though, we'll see over the next few months I guess.

This has me worried as I have a M240i Convertible that is due to start production any day. When I ordered last month HK sound was no problem and there showed no restrictions in regards to passenger lumbar support etc. I hope there's not a last minute deletion of options for my build.
Maybe I'm safe since HK is option 674 and not 688 for my car.

Mostly likely this....4er/M4 is made in Dingolfing and 3er/M3 in Munich so maybe the laser light supplier feeds each plant from two different sources.

it also stands to reason for simplicities they would secure 100% inventory for one model (M3) and risk 50% inventory on another (M4) rather than try to balance 80% M3 and 80% M4.

For the x5 they removed air suspension as an option all together or 40i and M50i so they could continue to serve it 100% on the 45e hybrid and X7s

Also in addition to this, could it be that M3 has higher sale volumes vs M4? So therefore it makes sense to keep component stock secured for the item that sells the most.
