California is crazy. Those mark ups are no way for me. Well hopefully they sit there and don't sell and in a few months they'll come down.

Scenario 1
- you buy with 15k mark up. Stealership is pleased you've made a great decision. You go home with buyers remorse and incredible sense of regret capital...but at least you're among the first to beta test the new car. Scenario 2 -You negotiate the $15k adjustment away. Dealership leaves you with a sense you made a great deal and only because you were a shrewd negotiator. You go home feeling like if you tried harder, maybe they could have given you 5% off msrp. Maybe more? You'll never know. Scenario 3 - Walk out with a slight grin to your face. You're at least going to be $15k richer today. You know it's going to be yours eventually but you wait until the dealership feels pain paying interest on its inventory. |

That's insane. I'd be curious to know how fast they sell at that price. Although some people just have crazy money to blow without caring I suppose.

The one at BMW SF sold for $30,000 over back in March. $15,000 over will sell easily. They know this that's why it's like that in the first place. Civic Type R sells for $70,000, RS6 for $170,000, TRD PRO Tacoma and Sequoia for $20,000 over. People have more money than brains.

@diesel733 thanks for sharing the pictures. What color is the grey?
MY 2022 will start production in 3 months, then the market price adjust will be history. Stealership is using the microchip/parts shortage, just have to have patience when there is excessive inventory in a few months and the floor interest payments start in 90 days. I believe that BMW NA provides practically zero interest for the floor models the 1st 90 days or so.

Even if they (BMW) isn’t charging interest on vehicles for first 90 days, that’s a lot of working capital that’s tied up in inventory... but that’s their gamble and they do it often so it must work.
If you want it now and want it there, I guess that’s the cost of entry. |

Joke. Local dealer told me even ordered cars would be 5k over sticker. I laughed in his face. Called me 3 weeks later offering to let me order at MSRP. Autonation no less, I thought they were not allowed to play those games.

East coast sounds like a different story, brokers are going 5%-8% off. It is doable, trust me.

Those cars will find idiot buyers for sure in Orange County (and SoCal in general). G63's and Porsche 911s are more common than Rav4s and Civics here. Californians who go the broker route will see covered shipping costs negate most discounts. Best thing to do is just wait. By the end of the summer you'll see the same discounts as you do elsewhere. I'm moving to the East Coast for work. Broker and PCD here I come! |

The markup in CA is not for the average successful enthusiast like us. It's for the uber rich who want the car today for whom 15k is a drop in the bucket. Don't blame the dealers. Business 101 to sell for the highest price right? I ordered my M3 from the Midwest for 7% off but here I am waiting until June.

I was ordering a base model with CF seats, so mine needed to be a special order. I found 2 dealers with allocations near SF asking for MSRP plus markups. I said a more polite translation of F.U. Allocations need to be exercised before the end of the month, so as the deadline approached, they called back offering lower markup and finally, on March 31, one offered at MSRP. I had already found one at MSRP a 2-hour drive from home. I was sorry to need to pay MSRP, but if you want to get one early, that's what it cost. It is better to pay Uber $150 to take you to pick up the car (if you sell privately) than $10k - $20k to some dealer. Almost every part of the transaction could be handled via phones and email. The only trip that was really needed was the one to pick up the car.

As someone who actually likes the G8X design for what it is I’d say it could be that Bay Area folks are more reserved while SoCal folks are more garish. No offense to my fellow OCers and LA denizens.

I was in there today - they still have the stickers on the cars but two salespeople have told me they're actually selling for MSRP. I guess right now it's just a moron tax for people so rich they don't even question it.

At least they are consistent ($15K on all of them).
When I was a wee tot, I bought a Z3 from my local dealer. My salesman was stoked, as he had just sold a Z8 that day. "What did it sell for?" I asked. "Twenty-five K over," he replied. I asked, "Did you give him a tube of K-Y with that?" Of course, now we know that those cars have done well, resale-wise. M3/M4, they're just normal production cars, and we just need to be patient.
