Reading his detailed results, I still think I'd choose the PS4S over the SportContact 7. As he notes, the Michelin is more well-rounded, and the hydroplaning results on the Conti's are concerning to me. |

I'd be willing to try the new Conti's on my M3 as I have been very pleased with the overall cost/performance of the Conti's vs the Michelins…. If they were available on the other side of the pond in the US….

Based on the data, it doesn't state if he used the BMW star spec Michelins. I can only assume he did not. There is a difference between the star spec PS4S and regular PS4S.
See the video.

As others have mentioned, there are multiple vendor specific PS4S that I can think of that use the softer compound on the outsides of the tire for better performance. These tires are more in between the regular PS4S and the Cup 2 for performance. They would remove any advantage the Conti's have in this test if you happen to have a vehicle that run these.
This test is a better representation for vehicles that don't run any kind of vendor specific tire. |

It's worth a look at the comments below this Tyre Reviews test article. Someone posting with the name Treadstone somehow deduced the test was done on Continental's track and so the Conti-Sport-Contact-7 could've had a home field advantage, because the Conti won the test. That Treadstone screen name is now plain text and so has probably been blocked.... Whereas all of the other commenters are still live linked to Disqus. He/She (Treadstone) put two comments below the article...
Article Link: https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/...-Tyre-Test.htm Interesting Comment 1: https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/...ent-5754596048 . Interesting Comment 2 https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/...ent-5754569377 . I'm wondering why the test was done in the first place with the brand new Conti-Sport-Contact-7 product being tested against the much older Michelin PS4S -> when the test could've been done a little later and with the new Michelin Pilot Sport 5S? So new product against new product.. but perhaps 'Conti' simply needed the test and article doing now..? Whatever the case, someone will test both products head to head very soon IMO. Perhaps Tire Rack. .

But finding an independent track with facilities to properly wet the track are few. There is MIRA in the UK for instance but its not open to the public and is quite expensive to hire out. I would also imagine that tuning a tyres performance to your own track rather than typical road surfaces would be quite short sighted....unless the test tracks surface closely represented typical road surfaces for the markets being sold into (highly likely). So what home advantage there may be is likely extremely small. |

The next questions to be asked could be, "where did the test tires come from?" and "did Conti supply the winning test set(s) to the tester?" and "were all of the test tires bought on the open market?". Conti not only supplied the test track venue, but also supplied the test car as well! Are such methods typically used in "independent" testing? What if ADAC did all their tests at Conti's facilities? Would that be appropriate for ADAC? Sorry, the test results and methodology just don't smell right to me. I think the test would be more credible IF the tester had waited until the Michelin PS5S was available to test against the Conti Sport Contact 7, and had been done at an independent facility. Perhaps Tyre Reviews could test the Michelin PS5S (when it comes out) against the Conti Sport Contact 7 at Michelin's test track?... See what I mean? Just kidding and just my two cents.

Anyone know when the PS5S will be released? I hear the PS5 is out March 1, but not sure how long until the PS5S will be available. I'm in need in of tires soon and planning to hold off until they're released.

For anyone asking about the new Michelin. The most recent info I received says the new successor to the Pilot Sport 4S will be out in March of 2023. Their will be a Sport S5 coming and will be part of the Pilot Sport family but not a direct replacement to the 4S.

In any event, it won't be long before independent testing can evaluate these tires to see if indeed wet traction tire physics have been stood on their head or not.

I would imagine the whole point of having your own track is that it removes a large variable from your tyre R&D...rather than to create a tyre that only performs at its best on it. Its also not like other testers will fly all their kit to Germany to conduct a tyre group test. So if the tyre isn't as good as this test shows then it will soon be evident. I watched a few of this guys videos and been impressed by him. In his previous tests he has championed the Mich P4S so I'm not inclined to think that he would be complicit in anything a bit dodgy. Anyway...It will be interesting to see how the Conti tyre performs in other group tests. |

Interesting. May have to look into the Continental Sport Contact 7 as my next set of summer tires.

I've been running Michelin tires on my cars since 2006. In fact, my Z4MC came with Bridgestones on the standard 18" wheels but very quickly I fitted it with the M3 CSL wheels and Michelin PS2 and it was transformative to the handling of the car.
My big family SUV came fitted with Hancooks from factory. Lasted 12K miles and when I replaced them with Michelins it improved comfort, ride quality, and handling. The M440xi came with the white-star PS4S and I'm thrilled with their performance. All that to say that Michelin has served me very well for nearly 20 years and I know I will get a consistently good product. While they may not be the king of the hill in outright performance, I'll stick with my tried and tested brand until they give me a reason to change. |
