The question at the end of the day for me is should I go X pipe or H pipe when the resonators are removed. Probably H as I want to keep a lower tone. Should be going to a local guy next week when he is available.

Its a simple reversal:

keep the part and go back, they rack and cut the straight and weld back the resonator.

FYI BMW FS uses 3rd party inspectors to review lease returns and they would never catch the resonator pull. They dont rack cars to inspect nor are they that skilled to understand the tonal change. They just come, inspect and sign off. Then the car either goes to the factory auction lane or the dealer buys it at a discounted number.

This mod wont cause a smog issue... most smog testing is now via obdII with no sniff.
Oh well in that case this is a day 1 mod.

Thanks for the deets friend

Yes sir---- and the way the resonators are set, your shop should be able to do it without lowering the pipes or anything.

I just dont know how both cans removed will sound.... yet

I've got about two months - I'm sure we'll know by then.

I think Im going to get a G80 tomorrow and will roll over to my muffler shop to get both pulled. Thats the easier fix early on as I dont know who has catless secondaries out.
Thats epic! Looking forward to your post and reviews.

Is the plan to remove both resonators ?

So since they are in segments--- I will pull the first to see what the sound is like outside. I know the OP has posted a YT vid here but sound is just not the same in person. Then If I want more Ill pull the second fatty that is closer to the mufflers. If its good Ill leave it and if not Ill have the shop reweld the 2nd resonator back.

Based on the pics of the G8X underbelly it its a pretty easy job for my guys who have cut alot out of my cars over the years

Thoughts:

I still want more sound!! The cold start up in M2 mode is very deep and low and once you warm her up the car has more burbles and grumbles than just pulling the front resonator. The car has interesting sounds as its lower and throaty in low rpms and then gets just a bit raspy at higher tones (more prevalent in the video than in real life thankfully). When I drive the car under load, the bark(s) are there as it up shifts. Its a good cheap 300 dollar mod IMHO.

Very cool. Two part second question: do you reckon removing the secondary cats as well will get you the sound you're looking for? Second, based on what you've seen, would it be possible to add those cats back in later on?

Great question and my apologies to the OP as Ive kinda taken over (Ill start my own when I get the proper vids)

answer to your questions:

Yes, if we pull those secondary sniffers, I think the sound will be just about right from a decibel standpoint.

Here are pics of the secondaries (I think we will need an actual fabrication here vs a muffler shop running a straight pipe but Im no expert)
