Having done this using the screw method, there is zero chance I would do this any other way.
1. Prying around the aluminum trim is asking for trouble, even with plastic tools. 2. The drill method might work, but it's messy producing a lot of shavings and then you're pulling on the end of an allen wrench 3. The screw method is the least messy, the screw threads bite securely, and you have a screw head you can pull with a hammer claw end, pry bar, whatever. The only mess I had was from these wood screws as they were coated. A little bit of the coating flaked off while drilling. Had I used uncoated screws, I doubt I even would have had to break out the vacuum. |

Not sure why people are (i) finding it difficult or (ii) ruining the original piece?
Lift centre armrest. Pull back on matt plastic cross piece, which retains the carbon centre console. Lift centre console a tad, pop out original piece. Pop in new piece, push all back in place. Five minute job and that's taking your time. |

Another +1 for drill method. Tried using trim tools and 5 layers of blue tape, silver trim started to dent slightly.
Don't even waste your time with trim tools. Never again BMW... Never again. |

From there, you can release the deco piece from the side. https://youtu.be/g7saKhWTGE8?si=RhDNTOjjbFPJQHyl |

I would be interested in hearing if anyone actually did that. Unscrewing the console piece around the shifter, will lifting slightly on that give you enough leverage to pop the M3 plastic piece?

Not initially, you can't get to it yet. You have to unscrew the piano black trim that is holding the shifter in place too

Did you pull with those pliers straight up with high force? Wiggle up? What did if feel like, please explain. |

I used a wood screw a little bigger than the pilot hole. It popped out straight up easier than I expected with a quick straight up pull. Caveman… seriously. |

Yeah I was concerned at first, but it takes no muscle at all to get the piece to come straight up, just finished it under a minute or 2. Two screws in the center, pull straight up. No wiggle, or anything.

Doesn’t take as much force as you think. I used a hammer claw. Two of them. Son and I both pulled. Pop. Right out. Was expecting some huge effort. |

Here's how you take the shifter out, then just push out that piece from the bottom.
