I just left the car for the break in service, 11xx miles, the service advisor checked and said only diff oil has to be changed, and the instruction is from the BMW system.

Is it normal that engine oil change is not a part of the break in..? (USA)

UPDATE: GM came out and apologized as it was a miscommunication from the SA, the engine oil change is included.

SAs (service advisors) are notorious for not fully understanding what the job is. The paper you get will confirm what work is done and the techs follow guides directly from BMW for each service that's requested. Unless the paper says it's not done then it will be done.

It’s standard procedure engine oil and rear diff fluid. There is nothing to debate here.

SA's are clueless, when i went it for my free oil change they wanted to sell me a $300 brake service that "made sure the pads are aligned properly to the rotor for optimal performance" it sounded like she memorized that word for word.
All brake in service includes engine oil and diff fluid, just wait for your paperwork and forget about the SA.

Same thing happened to me. SA insisted that there is no oil change just the ecu needs to be updated so it can have full power. Her logic was M4s are basically like race cars, so they don't need an oil change. And they need hook up to the ecu to make sure car is running like a race car. I am not making any of this up. I insisted for her to go check with the service manager to make sure. She comes back 10 min later, still not acknowledging her blunder but saying once they hook up the computer they will know if the car needs an oil change or not. Needless to say in an hour I received a video of the car getting drained all the fluids. I wonder how many m cars in my area still running with break in oil. 😔

I’m always amazed why most, if not all, in that field don’t actually take the time to educate themselves for the job they’re doing.

Some dealers are rated “M Certified Center”. I wonder if that makes a difference.

The irony of that is even that logic is WRONG, because guess what?… Race cars usually run race oil and that oil has even less detergent additive packs to it, so it requires even more maintenance and less time during intervals of change. That’s why they tell you NOT to run race oil in your everyday car if you’re doing extended interval changes. 🤦*♂️🙄

My experience with many different brands has varied on the specific SA. Those that are car enthusiasts are great to work with as they share the passion. Went in for an oil change at my local dealer today for the first time and my SA specifically said "obviously we will not run your car through our automated wash"

We even had a good chat about our passion for cars and history of past cars / mods that we have done.

Took mine in for break-in service today (@ 1,203 miles). The print out is quite interesting:

1. The engine oil (0W30 full synthetic) has the quantity '70' listed. So clearly not quarts or liters, but fractional quarts or liters...like a deciliter??

2. I assume the rear differential is the 'hypoid axle oil' with the quantity '2' listed.

3. My favorite line in the work order: "Customer States Invisible Service Performed (Yes) (No)". I'll upload a pic later.

4. "CBS Data shows car due for standard scope. Service due. Perform standard scope service."

Also, I found it odd that when I checked on the car's location in the app, it was in a residential area--that is not cool. There were 5 miles tacked on to the odo--I can understand a mile or two, but come on guys.

Yea I dunno I hear some dealers test drive the car after service but mine never does that. Just from garage area to the drop off and pick up. I never seen either one of my car leave the dealers area.

Depends on which tech does the fluid changes.

Some of them prefer a test drive to make sure the diff oil is performing as expected (previous generations had some noise issues) to save you a return trip in case of an issue and others don't care as much. 5 miles is reasonable for a test drive, a mile or two won't warm up much.

If this is a concern for you, next time request that they contact you prior to any test or diagnostic drives.

Thanks for sharing this perspective...didn't consider that [for differential oil change]. I suppose if this happens again for just a regular oil change, I may further inquire.
