6MT Owners - How much do you hate the cupholders?

I often have a drink in my car while driving. Water bottles are fine because I put them in the side cup holder in the door. However, when I have a a coffee or a soda, I need to use the cup holder in the center console.

If grip the shifter normally with a cup in the cup holder, my knuckles will hit the drink when I'm shifting into an odd numbered gear. This is somewhat negated when I'm by myself and I use the passenger cupholder, so I only have the issue for 3rd and 5th gears. However, my girlfriend is often with me and we have two drinks. It really gets annoying having to shift and I wonder why the designers didn't put this into consideration.

I don't use fountain drink cups in the car because of that shitfter, 20oz bottles and 12-16oz cans are fine

Designers are European and only Americans have to have 64oz big gulp in the car while they drive, lol

They were similarly bad in my 6MT M2C. I hardly ever use them. It's almost as if BMW engineers were salty that we could want to have a beverage with us while operating their ultimate driving machine, and subtly got back at anyone who would dare do such a thing, by designing these terrible cupholders!

I don't use them at all, but I can see how they'd be terrible. If I have a shaker bottle it goes in the cupholder by my leg.

I order a medium or small and it's generally fine. Get weird looks when they give me a large accidentally and I ask for a medium. And hey, it's better than my old e39.

I wasn't surprised by them thanks to my M2C and my F30 340i before it. Both of them had space issues with tall cups. It hasn't actually been a problem, but it is a bit annoying.

who dares put a drink in this car lol. I only risk the occasional water bottle in the door area. Anything else will spill 100% with them Gs.

I don’t drink in my car. If I was taking a longer trip I’d use the one in the door.

+1

I don't have my G80 yet, but I would nominate the E39 for the worst cupholders of all time.

Don't drink and drive

try adjusting your grip on the shifter. push up into 3rd/5th rather than pull up.

Not a problem for me. I just change my grip to accommodate. I will say that these are 100% better than what was in my 991. Those are absolute garbage.

I’ve recently seen a video of an owner taking delivery of a 992 GT3, which is my dream car, and thought it had a much worse position for a cup holder.
I rarely use my cup holders, but I do not think it’s the worst location for a sport vehicle w/ a 6MT.
First world problem for sure… it’s literally the last thing I’d think about when considering my fun/weekend car.
