Yeah someone near me has a X3M in that color and it definitely has more orange than many of the pics show. I like it.

This came out great, the highlight definitely being the sideskirts. Did you think about doing body color mirror covers? Feels like it would complete the look.

I did think about that but ultimately decided against it because I couldn't decide exactly how I wanted them to look in red. The easiest option would have been to paint the front cap (the part that folds) but then the lower arm would be black. What I wanted to do was to have the lower arm and the cap painted, but there was no obvious place in that scenario to create a line between the mirror and the black window frame… can you tell that I fretted about this? 😂

Yeah, lol. I still think it would look pretty decent thought...

We still have enough paint to do more. Maybe in a month or two!

What was the inspiration for how you choose to paint it. I rarely say things like this but…. "That is how it should have come from the factory" well done.

Looks fantastic, spridge! Scheduling issues have prevented me from getting mine done. I was going to go full body color, but your more nuanced approach is quite artful and successfully retains a refined OEM look. I received quotes between $1-2k. What did it cost?

I spent an inordinate amount of time looking at the photoshopped and real examples on this forum, but ultimately the deciding factor for me was the shape of the pieces themselves. I originally thought I'd just have them painted fully with the body color, but the shape of the pieces would have looked (IMO) strange without a contrasting color. I thought they looked strange when the parts were entirely black as well. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out, and between that and the MSS springs, the factory lift kit is now a thing of the past!

When I discussed the job with my painter, he said that BMW probably didn't paint them like this because you can't accomplish it with a fully robotic process. The entire piece has to be painted the body color, dried, then taped and painted black, tape pull while the black is still wet, then fully dried and finally clear coated. He said that the manufacturer would probably view this as a $5K "upgrade" due to the manual process.

On to your question - if you're going to reuse the skirts, then the bumpers and rockers have to be removed in order to remove those pieces without damaging the tabs that hold them on. The videos that some companies have posted showing them adding the CF side skirts are very misleading in this regard. The full job, including disassembly/assembly and the paint process described here is $2,500 - $3,000.

That makes a ton of sense, very unique but also subtle enough that only those "who know" will be able to pick out what's different, which in my book is a huge plus

Great to know. Traditionally, one achieves this look with full body color trim and bolting on CF or black ABS pieces (lip and side skirts). I think that may yield an even more aggressive stance and will likely be my approach since it will probably end up costing about the same ($1-1.5k paint, $1.5-2k CF parts).

What interior colors are you TR owners going with? Having a hard time deciding which color to go with. Black is too plain for my liking and silverstone just seems like it wouldn’t hold up well since I’ll be having a kid in the backseat. Fiona red seems like too much red with the exterior color and the orange and blue/green don’t seem like it’ll go well at all.

The tartufo would go well with TR but that option is out if you are dead set on having the carbon buckets.

I kind of feel like black, silverstone, and tartufo are the only options that would truly work.

Trying to find the right interior color was the main reason I didn't go with TR! I didn't want plain Black and wasn't impressed by Tartufo as it was not sporty enough without the 2-tone black inserts like the other colors. Like you I was worried that Silverstone wouldn't hold up with 2 kids in the backseat. I wasn't comfortable with Fiona Red & Kyalami Orange on a red exterior although I've had a red on red M in the past that looked sick!

I ordered Toronto Red/Fiona Red with red brakes. I hope it's not too much red. Being from Toronto I had to get TR plus everything else of mine is red including my E93 in Melbourne Red. I'm a little worried now TBH.
