2021 M3 Comp, 2020 X3M Comp, or 2020 M550i

Looking to purchase a new car.....what would you guys recommend
2020 X3M Comp
2020 M550i
2021 M3 Comp

I previously had an M340i and I just sold it and want to experience something even better.

Those are 3 pretty different vehicles...what are you looking for, specifically?

as you are in the M3/M4 Forum you can guess what most of us would pick :P

But as OF Hero said...3 pretty different vehicles. Depends on what you are looking for.

If you have the suv itch go ahead and scratch it. I have had a C63, M3, M5 leading up to an X5M and enjoyed that vehicle immensely. Now I'm back in an M5. No regrets.

Since you're coming from an M340i I would say the natural upgrade is the G80 M3.

But if you're looking for more luxury then M550i.

If you're looking for more utility and/or ground clearance then X3M.

Just commuting to school? Sounds like you don't really need an "M" anything..

I had this dilemma and picked an f82. Best look and driving feel, but behind in terms of tech. The LCI M550 with red calipers is really good looking though

I mean it would be a daily driver, school work anything else a normal college student does, I would use it for. A 1999 corolla works just fine but I said the cars above for a reason lol

Yeah this sounds good! Based on everyones responses I think the M3C is the best overall choice. X3M as the next. Maybe want to try out an SUV but lets see haha. Hopefully M5, but i dont think it will happen so these are my main options

I got to say the x3M comp is such a fun car. I drove one for a few weeks and loved every min of it. Its super fast and was nice to sit up high. The new M3 nobody knows bc nobody has driven one plus you will be paying a lot more then you would for the x3M due to the brand newness of it and the terrible programing on those. The 5er is a big car, luxury no doubt but its big. I personally like smaller cars, so my suggestion would be to go drive the 5er and the x3 and make your determination between those two, or at-least eliminate one of this two and wait for the M3 to come open for you to drive and go from there.

happy hunting

A new option to consider -- Up until now, I thought the G80 M3 was the only game in town for a Manual Transmission high performance sedan, and I was getting ready to place an order this month.

But after seeing the CT5V-Blackwing (with avail Manual Transmission and 668HP), I think it would be prudent to wait for some reviews to come out.

Good Luck!

Do you need 4 doors and the practicality of the M3C? I would look at the M2C for a fun car. There is plenty of time later to get the more practical car. My 2 cents. Obviously only you know what you like.

I think I've decided on the M550i. I talked to BMW and the lease prices for the M3C are insanely high. M550i top pick in my budget and M5 if my father allows it.

Thank you guys for the input, helped a lot.

I have an x3m its an oldER platform. very good engine but that's about it. the base G platform handles better. lower GC and there is more compliance in the suspension believe it or not. imho. between those 3 I would choose the real ///M car based the better transmission layout.

I always thought the M550i is a great deal since they first launched it. Just over $70k for a car with that engine and AWD is hard to beat. And now with the good looks of the LCI and 530hp even more so.

It was early reported to be soft with excessive body roll but due to the value I’ve been tempting to get one and put coil overs on it and still have huge amount of air between it and the M5. The styling before LCI was very bland though. Now it’s much better.

Please post here when you get it

I was in the market for a use F80 or pre LCI M550. I was budgeting high 40's low 50's. You are looking at more expensive cars which are newer - but I suspect the differences I observed when I was shopping are probably stlll very relevant to the newer cars.

The smaller/lighter M3 will feel far more nimble and fun. It is a more raw experience. The M550, which fast and a lot of fun, is more of a daily driver. Think like your M340 only larger with AWD and more torque and way more luxury.

If you want a car that you can track get the M3. Any M550, no matter what year is NOT a track car. It is a very fast very fun heavy luxury car, but very practical and livable.

For a daily driver that you can take people in - the M550 is likely the better choice.

I went with a 2018 M550. It's a ton of fun, but it's a daily driver, not a track toy. It goes fast and handles well, but it will never go around twisties like a lighter M340 / M3 / M4.

Test drive them both and think hard about what you plan to do with the car and what will make you smile. I sometimes wish I had the M3 - mostly when I am alone on an on-ramp.

The other 99% of the time I prefer my M550. I can do 0-60 in 3.9 while getting ass massaged. If you don't need all the creature comforts, rear seat and trunk space - you will have more fun in the smaller car. I'm 50 with 3 kids so the M550 made more sense.

Good luck. Either car is amazing.

Did you get one?
