Car Decision/comparison Help

I sold my F23 M240 not to long ago. I loved it but it was time for a change. I am now in a position to order a dream car and I'm down 2 cars. I am debating between a 2022 M4 convertible or a 2022 Porsche Spyder and wanted to know your thoughts between the 2 vehicles. There seems to be very few comparisons online. I will primarily use the car on curvy country roads and may take to a track sparingly. What do you think between the 2 cars?[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

I would choose the Spyder over the M4. To me, a convertible M4 just looks awkward in terms of proportion. a 2D vert seems way more fitting vs. a 2+2.

Such very different cars so a comparison isn’t even relevant IMO, just like comparing a cayman to an M4 coupe.

Do you want fast luxury GT car with a big trunk and 4 seats? Or do you want a small sporty 2 seater drivers car?

If the car is just for fun and you don’t need it to be practical I’d say Porsche all day long.

If rear seats are not a concern, Porsche Spyder 100%

I assume it's a lot more expensive once you've optioned it up?

M4 convertible is way easier to live with every day. I traded in a 2018 540 x-drive and a 2020 Z4 for an M4 convertible and don't regret it one bit. It's kind of the best of both worlds. Everyone I know with a 2 seater also has an SUV or another daily driver. The Porsche is an unbelievably fun car to drive but it wouldn't work for me if it was my only car.

When I spec them both out the way I want, there is about a $10k-15k difference.

If you aren’t chasing horsepower numbers, I would say definitely Porsche.

Pick whichever you value most.

If I had the choice, I'd choose the Porsche.

I debated between the m4 coupe and GT4. In the end i chose the M4.
Its my daily and much more practical. The M4 vert has an awkward design. Not beautiful or sexy like thePorsche.

I'm nearly in the same situation, trying to decide between a "loaded" Cayman T & the M4. Both are identical in cost. Practicality & location of dealer service, 1.5 to 2 hours away, are both major factors.
I've previously owned 2 981's and a 991.1 so my heartstrings are pulling me to Porsche but my practical brain says M4.

Porsche makes some great cars, but if its not some variant of the 911, I'd go M4CV.

Porsche always has been and always will be about the 911 for me....a 911 cab in whatever trim I/you can afford, otherwise save some money.

Thanks for the help everyone. I am surprised to see so many people say Porsche
In this forum but everyone offered good advice. I am currently in the allocation hunt for a spyder. I May end with the m4 just because the spyder allocations seems to be getting harder to snag.

Cayman T is a flop only because of that garbage engine. Such a shame. I'd rather a 2016 base Cayman over the new T.

Country roads and track? Boxster all day. The spyders and GT4's are amazing machines. And this is coming from someone who sold a 981 and is on the market for a G80...I just need the back seats. And the spyders hold their value.

I have a Cayman GTS 4.0 Manual and a brand new M3 Base Manual now (GTS has basically the same engine, slightly detuned to 200 less RPM). I have a Spyder on order. I have driven GT4's and Spyders multiple times, including in 90 minute sessions on track at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta.

For the criteria of "I will primarily use the car on curvy country roads and may take to a track sparingly" - no question, the Spyder. It is a much more "special" car for those weekend country road drives. It is probably one of the most special cars on the market right now, that naturally aspirated 4.0L is a terrific engine. That chassis is incredible with regards to handling on country roads and on a track.

With regards to the 911 comment above, a 911 is a LOT more like a G8x than the Spyder is. Turbocharged versus NA, and the 911 has become bigger and heavier and much more so a sporty GT car than a pure Sportscar, which is the case for an M4 as well. It does deserve to be compared, except for price, a well equipped 992 911 is in an entirely different price range, especially in S or GTS trim.

The 718 4.0's are in my opinion (and Chris Harris') more fun to drive than any 911 short of a GT3, especially on public roads at reasonable speeds, get bang for the buck in that regard.

Spyder allocations are VERY tough to come by right now. Expect also to pay a $10-25K ADM if you do find one. I had to pay an ADM for my order.

Per the comment above, the Spyder will hold its value incredibly well, especially if this turns out to be the last 718 generation with an NA Flat6. That would more than offset any ADM paid, in the longer term.

One minor note - the Spyder has a very low front-end fascia and no option for a nose lift. That is probably the biggest challenge with the Spyder for any attempt to daily drive it. Thus best left to Weekend Drives and Track use.

The M3/M4 makes for a GREAT Daily Driver, even in a Manual, at least for me.

Good luck with your choice! Both are amazing cars, in their own ways...

Porsche: There is no substitute. Marketing mumbo-jumbo, but it's accurate to a certain point.

The M4 is fabulous, but as others have mentioned, it's not really a fair comparison.

The Spyder will beat you up in ride quality and ergonomics. If you're young enough and/or don't care, then it's by far the superior driving car. If you are a person of advancing years such as myself, then the calmer demeanor and more compliant ride, higher stance and spacious cabin in the M4 will win out.

If you have no build slot assigned for the Porsche or even an allocation at MSRP, you wont really have a choice if you want your car rather sooner than later. And if you are willing to pay ADM the price difference will be even worse. Take that into consideration…..and I agree that a Porsche is a different type of car than M4 requiring more compromises.

At the moment they have agreed to no ADM and I'm ok with waiting. I do have the customer demand/ request for the spyder and no one ahead of me in the list while the dealerships awaits an allocation. So we shall see if that holds up. The m4 seems easier to get so I have not put a deposit down yet.

I have had similar considerations albeit between a base M4 and a cayman T. The one thing that keeps bothering me is the size of the cayman and what’ll happen if one gets into an accident with it. Physics being what it is, it’s just a little unnerving.

On the flip side, I now get why the M4 is the size that it is. All vehicles have gotten so huge that everything has to grow in proportion to each other. While the G8x platform is bigger than its predecessor, it’s still small compared to a F150 on the road.

In this sense, the M4 gives me a feeling of safety vs the cayman.

It more about energy absorption and not just pure mass, although this does play a part in things. Some good videos out from the NHTSA for their 50th anniversary showing an old heavy Malibu vs a newer one.

On the M4 vs Spyder, Spyder without question. Just a pure drivers car.

Based on your intended use its the Spyder hands down. Nothing will run the country roads with the enjoyment of the Spyder except for another two seater.
