PPF disaster thoughts?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello World,

Recently picked up my g80 from dealership and took it to a shop in the area. After getting the job done and pickup up and further inspection, the quality of the job was done extremely poorly. Corners are already peeling and they even scratched my headlight 🤦‍♂️.
Took it back to them to get it fixed and they said they would redo the whole job. 2 weeks in and they still haven’t even touched the car. What would you do? The most frustrating part aside from the poor execution bubbles on film and tint was the headlight scrape from a blade..

To add to the story I told them about the issues and they mentioned everything will be redone and done within a week. It’s been 2 weeks and not a single thing has changed. I inspect the car on the 360 camera function and it never moved the parking spot. After I called today to check up they didn’t answer called back and said oh we’ve been really busy and your car is going to get done tomorrow. After I explicatly stated I needed the car for Friday and this weekend.

I'd ask for my money back and bring it to a shop that has a good reputation. I have no experience with tint or paint protection installation but I'd probably be able to do it better than this. Once, the existing film is removed, check for damage to the paint from razor blades and make sure they didn't damage any interior panels or leather parts. Document everything.

That's not the worst I've ever seen to be honest. Its a below average job for sure but lot of those issues on corners and edges (like in your first and second photos) happen with PPF. No job is going to be 100% perfect and you will have to go back after a week or two for touch ups fixes. Go back and have them fix it.
I don't have an opinion on the tint.

Agree ^^

Assuming it’s a reputable shop, give them a chance to fix it.

Not sure why you let them keep the car two weeks without working on it? Agree on when they will work on it, if they don’t follow through, get the car and contest the cc charge.

I did give them benefit of the doubt brought it back and was promised one week turn around to fix all issues, and it’s been 2 weeks with no updates.

They also mentioned it will be rectified in one week, as I was away for work for the first week I will be back and able to pickup the car.

Hot take...the overwhelming majority of PPF jobs are trash. People just don't like to admit it. Also, ancillary headaches (cracked light, broken trim, PDC issues, misaligned parts, etc.) are very common.

I'd hold off on them doing any of the corrective work. They have already shown you what level of work to expect.

Full PPF job or just the front hood and fenders and other impact areas? If it was full, that price is on the low end, so I’m not saying it was done cheap, but it was done most likely quickly… bang it out and onto the next one. Quantity not quality is how that shop makes their money. If it was just the front and not a full one, then yeah, I would definitely expect some pristine attention to detail perfection for that money, not that bs.

Wow! That is very expensive compared to my front clip. I think it was 2200 + 300 for tint. I did not worry about mine as the place I took it does all the work for the BMW Performance center which is only a few miles away.

I’d probably give them one more chance as you are not likely to get your money back. Hopefully you paid with a credit card. If they screw it up the second time I’d notify my CC company and put in a dispute. I’d also tell them you want it fixed now or you will dispute the charge. They already got your money so you either need to apply pressure or just go to your CC company and dispute.

If you include ceramic on top (which OP did) I think $3500 is pretty reasonable. Not amazing, but not horrible.

I don't have an opinion on the tint.
I agree.
Those are piss poor jobs for sure, but I've seen worse.
Either way, that's not acceptable IMO.
The tinting is REALLY bad too.

Yeah they figured he'd go blind before the install was done. OP it's a difficult job and there is no way I would have given the car to a PPF place without checking them out thoroughly. I know you said you have no experience with PPF but their are plenty of good PPF shops in New Jersey. Also just to pour a little salt in the wound I had my car PPF'd 7 years ago and it looks better than yours today.

I wouldn’t call this a disaster of a PPF job (we’ve seen much worse on here!) but agree that it isn’t the best of jobs either. That does suck about the headlight and I’d be pissed at that part. I’ve never not had a tint job that didn’t end up having some small bubbles to it. Most of them will go away after a couple of weeks but even then I’ve had a few that remained. I do see a few larger bubbles in your pics and I would ask them to fix those for sure.

Another week of no communication and them not doing anything and I’d be going to pick up my car and doing a chargeback. Hope you didn’t pay cash, this is bs work for cash, ya know…

That’s why it’s all about the installer. And just like with any skilled craft, the skill can vary within the specific shop. And their preference of film (if they are reputable, it will be one of the preferred films) matters.
