Sound Control Button Revisited
Yes, I know this has been discussed. Yes, I saw this video:
There seems to still be confusion what this button does, at least to me. This video seems to suggest it just toggles ASD off/on, but many here want bimmercode to code ASD off. Why, if there is already a button for it? Are they just mistaken? Or...what? I'm not interested in: I hear more burbles, I hear more farting, definitely louder. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it does from a technical/mechanical question. Does it: 1) Toggle ASD off/on 2) Make ASD louder/softer (it's always on) 3) Make the actual exhaust louder/softer (either with flaps or something else) 4) 1 & 3 5) 2 & 3 6) Something else If it changes the actual exhaust at all, how does it compare with the M Engine Dynamics Control settings? The manual says: "The SPORT and SPORT PLUS programs change the sound characteristics of the exhaust gas system. The sound takes on a sporty nature." Anybody know exactly what this button does?

SPORT/SPORT+ will make it sound louder vs COMFORT if Sound Control is Off. In either mode, it goes quieter with it On. Not sure how it compares between the modes when ON (i.e quieter) , have not played with that to notice.

When the button is off (not illuminated) it turns off ASD and closes the exhaust valve regardless what engine mode you are in. When the button is on you get ASD and exhaust valves open when engine is in the higher sport modes. Just to clarify, when engine in comfort mode exhaust valves closed regardless of button status.

Just try it for yourself. The difference is audible. Do it with windows up/down and check it from the outside. You'll figure out quickly. To me, I could care less how it is happening, what matter is audible level and comfort. On long drives, it gets tiring for me unless sound control is off.

Not everyone gets the OTA updates at the same time either, so that confuses things even more. I am glad there is a separate button for the exhaust loudness. On my F30 340 with MPE it would be loudest in Sport+ but that is the mode I preferred to be most of the time, so I had to choose driving characteristics vs sound comfort. With the M3 I can mix and match.

Good info here. Think I finally have a handle on how this thing works.
Question - I assume the "M Sound On/Off" button in the 2023 M3s is the same as "ASD On/Off" button being discussed here? To summarize (I tried uploading a table to make it easier, but didn't work ): ASD Button On (same as M Sound On?) Comfort Mode: ASD On, Valves Closed Sport Mode: ASD On, Valves Open Sport + Mode: ASD On, Valves Open ASD Button Off (same as M Sound Off?) Comfort Mode: ASD Off, Valves Closed Sport Mode: ASD Off, Valves Closed Sport + Mode: ASD Off, Valves Closed So basically, there is no option to have the exhaust valves open and the fake speaker sound off at the same time, and that's why we need Bimmer Code, correct? |

The button does not totally turn it off from what I can tell. Coding it out is the only way to get it totally off. Then if the dealer does a software update it will need to be coded out again.
