E46 M3 GTR... because Razor stole it and I had to battle up the Blacklist to get it back.

Man you didn't have to do the F80 dirty like that. I don't think it's the best but believe it deserves a poll option!

E30 M3. Old dude here that used to dream about this car since the 80s. I hung a E30 M3 poster in the classroom of my middle school in 1987 next to the original cinema poster from Ferris Bueller‘s day off. I am not kidding. Our teacher allowed this back in the day.

If your asking people to be honest than where is the F80? I don't consider it to be the best, but it should be included for it looks alone.

Best for what?
E30 - best for collecting. The chassis is as stiff as a wet noodle. E36 - best for AutoX. E46 - best for ”old school” E90 - best V8, because it was the only V8 F80 - conveniently not listed in your poll G80 - best all rounder, best in its class |

I picked the G80 for the simple fact that it (well, technically the G82) is the only one that I've actually wanted enough to buy. I passed on the other models, except the E30 and E36 as I wasn't in the market then.
I still have a bit of a soft spot for an Imola red E46 though. That's my 2nd favorite. |

G80.
Objectively the best one. It's the best one even relative to its own era. M3 has never been so far ahead of its competition for its entire existence. For those who remember their own better years, nostalgia kicks in of course.

I voted G8x but it recorded as E30. The G8x is objectively the most refined M3 with everything BMW has learned packed into a car. Build quality is top notch, this is the first BMW I own that doesn’t rattle. If you get xDrive, it’s super confidence inspiring in all situations. The S58 is an excellent motor in stock form and a monster once tuned, and there are no known fatal flaws (yet).
That being said I don’t think it’s fair to compare multiple generations of M3’s to each other and call one better than the other. Instead if you compare each generation to their competitors of the same era, BMW M cars always come out on top. |

E46 is an icon. There will never be another M3 like the cultural impact the E46 had. It helped create the high performance scene we have now in the US.

The G80 is the best overall, but not at everything. I owned an E90 for 7 years and I currently have an E46 that I’ve owned for 5 years. The G80 is better than both of those, but not in every way. The E46 has magic telepathic steering. The E90 had an unbeatable engine sound and throttle response. Still, in the end, the overall goodness of the G80 prevails in my mind. I’ve put 14,000 miles on my G80, and I still smile every time I drive it. Overall, the best ever.

I had a E46 M3 which I bought new and thought it was the greatest car ever. I decided to compliment the car with a mint <25k mile E30 M3 which I loved to look at but frankly where I think the saying " don't meet your hero's originated from" Slow, frustrating trying to find the power band while the shifter is doing its best impression of a mixer in your hand...did I mention it was great to look at?
Finally the value reached the point where a private collector offered me so much money I could not keep it as it just did nothing for me but it was great to look at. All the praise and nostalgia for that M3 mostly comes from people who never spent time driving/owning one. The G80 M3 is the size of my E60 M5 but feels half the weight. BMW has done a great job with their voodoo magic. I have a 2012 Porsche Spyder when I need to feel a real sports car. The G80 M3 is just a great car but the best M3...E46. |

e46 was peak m3. e30 m3 was a race car sold to public just to satisfy homologation requirements. I had one, it was a blast on a track but horrible to drive on the street due to the S14 engine needing to be wrung out to bring it to life. e36 m3 was the first mass produced m3 but the US version was detuned and felt soft. Never really warmed to it. e46 m3 was a proper street car that you could take on the track on weekends and really enjoy it. The s54 engine is still an amazing motor to this day. I've raced e46 and e92 m3s and while the v8 is very nice the additional weight on the e9x chassis just doesn't give it the balance the e46 had. No idea on f80 I skipped than gen altogether. G80 is an amazing all rounder but the e46 m3 was just ground breaking when it came out over 20 years ago.

I had to vote for the E9x. The engine. Not the fastest or the best handling. But the fact that BMW M put an engine like that in a road going car is just too good.
The E9x was the best looking M3, IMO. And the engine was the centerpiece. |
