M3 Competition xDrive as a daily

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi all, I'm in a dilemma. I have an M340i on order, but my dealer is getting in an M3 Competition xDrive in, likely before my M340 is delivered. The M3 is my dream car, but if I go with the M3 it will be my daily driver, that includes during the winter, in the Midwest. I realize I am asking this to the M3/4 crowd but for any of you who've daily driven the M3/4 comp in similar circumstances would you have chosen different if you could do it over again? Would the M3 comp be livable as a daily driver with exposure to crappy roads and winter use?

I daily mine. We had a 2020 m340 and it was boring. Full stop.

M3X as daily is just fine.

I'll be using mine as a daily as well. But I live in SoCal so no winter roads.

With X drive you'll be completely fine. I've got a 6spd RWD on order and even I'm thinking I'll be fine with some good A/S tires and maybe some sandbags in the trunk.

I've seen this question a thousand times.

If money is no issue (more expensive tires and upkeep, but not by much).

Get the M.

If you drive an M, the m340 becomes a joke.

Two different leagues of car.

We have had this question asked plenty of times. A search should bring up those threads and here are a few.

I daily drive my M4 AWD. I just ensure that I have the right tires for the season equipped - basically winter tires for anything below 45 degrees, and summers for anything 58 or so up.

I love it. No way I'm going back to a non-M for a daily driver if I can manage it.

I live in Colorado and have a RWD Comp and a truck, so I just drive the truck whenever it gets bad. That said, I have daily driven several AWD sedans and never had a problem with the right tires. Also, worth mentioning that my buddy's dad daily drove an E36 M3 in Colorado for like twenty years, so I'm sure you'll be fine.

Do you take the bus when it's between 45 and 58?

Winters or summers work fine for anything in between. Winters are required below 45, summers work better once you cross the 58-60 region.

Daily drive the M4C. Why wouldn't you drive the car every chance you get? They don't look all that good up on blocks in the garage.

As a Canadian, these threads make me laugh. I've been DD M3/M4 since the e92 (rear wheel drive only) in -40C winters with snow accumulation of 12"+, all you need is a good set of winter tires in a squared setup. With the advent of xDrive on the new M3/M4, you'll have no problems.

I was just joking around with you, I drove summers above 45 with no problem just not consistently.

Minnesota here. Have only had my xdrive M for two weeks but had some blizzard conditions, drifts, slush and snow covered roads all in two weeks. I have winter wheels with Michelin Alpin 5s. I was worried about snow handling given the width of the tires, but it has been surprisingly good. I also have a xdrive 335 with performance snow tires and it's a bit better in the snow due to narrower tires. So you will lose a little in snow performance vs the 340 with snow tires but the m with snow tires remains very strong. It's a great car, so if money is not an issue, get the m. Just don't go with all seasons bc that is just bad for all seasons.

These line of cars, M, AMG, RS are meant to be the pinnacle of daily drivable sport cars, so the moment they stop being as such the brand will die

I daily my M3, but it is a rough suspension for a daily. Certainly liveable though. As for winter, the wide tires are horrible for winter. Awd does not help braking or turning corners in snow. I guess it depends on how much snow you get where you are in the midwest. I used to live at a ski resort and I had dedicated winter tires, but obviously that is not practical wherever you are. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but the M3 is just so much more car than city streets can handle. I am thinking about selling mine as I find the speed to be unuseable. This is a track car with four doors. I would save the money and stay the course.

I have been driving my manual rwd G80 on a square 275/35/19 set of snow tires all winter. When the snow gets deep, I take the truck (due to ground clearance). But otherwise, a perfect daily driver that keeps a smile on your face and gives your credit card a good workout at the pump. Which is the whole point of an M3!!!

About a week and half ago in Connecticut we went from 70 degrees to 36 in matter of 3 days

Seriously, people worry too much. I lived in Michigan for 5 years and my only car was 2800lb rwd. With a decent set of narrower winter tires, 80 lbs of sand in the trunk, shortshifting with a light foot, and a little bit of foresight, I had no trouble getting around. Hell, I even looked forward to snow.
