DIY: Dinan Valve Controller Instructions

Installation time is 30min to 45min. The kit looks great, and having everything inside should prevent the issues that the other popular company has.

1. Remove the grommets on the sides of the trunk

2. Depin harness by sliding the purple bar then gently pressing down on the pin as shown in the picture. Blank - red - black - white

3. I used a unibit to make a hole in grommet and fed the wires through. Put the dual plug part on the passenger side. Its a bit of a tight fit to make sure theres enough slack to allow the muffler to move around. I want to run any cables under the car.

4. Connect both sides to the valves. Use a balloon or tips of rubber gloves to protect the oem harness. You'll see a perfect circle to zip tie them too. Loop the wires around the harness itself to take up the slack to ensure no contact with the suspension or muffler.

5. 10mm to remove the bolt for the battery bracket. Connect both ground wires and reattach bolt.

6. Buy a fuse tap or get creative like I temporarily did. #207 is a blank space that only gets power with the key.

7. Zip tie the excess wires and tuck them under the trunk cover.

8. Request thank yous from your neighbors for quieter cold starts

Do you use a remote to control the valves? Thanks for a great write up!

They fully open and close with the remote. I programmed the homelink to control it and no longer need the remote. This requires using two buttons.

Only flaw is the oem system is disconnected so there’s no more auto setup like the other units offer. Personally that’s a nonissue for me, but maybe someone else would prefer it.

Slight hiccup but I already emailed dinan.

The homelink isn’t programming. When I hit the bottom on the remote it’s not saying active to program. Hopefully there’s a way to keep the signal open so the car has time to sync.

Is it possible to reprogram the opening and closing of the values sound control button? I personally hate having blank/nonfunctional buttons, but can live with it.

Would anyone be willing to do a full video install?

That’s what I’ve wondered with this controller. Either way, not a deal breaker. Awesome write up and appreciate you calling out a specific fuse. Nice work!

I thought i had it programmed, but so far no luck. I'll play with it more later this week and post up what i figure out.

Its super duper simple, the included instructions are great. The two main things I'm hoping i helped with is best place to route the wires and where to tap power.

If you can buy the car, you can install this. You got this!

Can you check to see if it throws a code? The VSC2 does throw a code for reference - THX OP

Yeah, they all do. It does not trigger check engine light. You have to plug your code reader in and you’ll see it, that is if this unit does so.

I’ll check soon assuming the BimmerCode dongle can see it. The wires are disconnected so I’d assume there’s an internal fault, but no visible CEL.

Great writeup and I have the Dinan valve controller also. My guy installed mine but tapped onto 12 volt plug in trunk. He did the same with grommet for entering trunk so there wouldn't be a opening. The ground wire outside of trunk was placed in a area where he found behind a plastic tray near exhaust behind the heat shield. I don't believe you can program remote because it's a older version shipped with units. I seldom turn mine off unless my wife is in car and sometimes I just want quiet time.

My guy installed the Dinan controller but says the CEL light is on as the OEM couplers are left unattended. Any suggestions to take care of the CEL?

Strange, I’ve had my valve controller plugs disconnected plenty of times with no CEL for months at a time.

Can you get the code? Bimmerlink is a great app for this. Wondering if it’s a coincidence, and some other issue?

I have no lights or warnings on my dash. 700-800 miles since it was installed and it’s been flawless so far.
