Chris Harris has never been the one to over-promote his own material. The quality of his journalism and charisma on camera did that for him and landed him his spot on Top Gear and as a founding member of Collecting Cars today.

He’s been at the very apex of automotive journalism going on 20 years now, from his early days at Evo and his time on the now defunct Drive Network (early YouTube premium content days).

He got there because of his own self deprecating sense of self (he definitely doesn’t think of himself as the GOAT), wicked talent behind the wheel, and a sharp ability to provide cultural and comparative context when reviewing cars.

Should you be impressed? Yes, yes you should.

In Australia, an Alpina B3 Touring is $40k cheaper (AUD). Seems like a no brainer to me...

Funny you mentioned that; I've actually looked at that option rather seriously. Not sure about the engine though.

What amazes me is the amount of driving he does. He actually drives all his cars.

And gaining much more practicality in the process. For those of us who need the trunk space, that’s a welcome trade off. And for those who don’t need or want it, or don’t find the style attractive, they can stick with the sedan versions of the cars. But the idea you are losing much by going the wagon route, if anything, in performance is a fallacy.

Wagons are usually heavier due to having to reinforce the rear to maintain chassis stiffness. Most people won’t notice though, so the fact that an M wagon exists is pretty special.

B58 is rather stout (and sounds better than the S58 in my opinion). Alpina has full factory backing from BMW now as far as I know and the engines are upgraded to support the additional power. It's a less complicated engine overall than the S58 so there's less stuff to break?

Alpina green, brown interior, multispoke wheels...

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the B58 but somehow can't justify the asking price for a B3 with a B58 knowing that after five minutes of ownership, the B3 will depreciate by 50%

That's not to say that the M3 Touring won't depreciate as badly but at least it'll be fun driving it as fast as it depreciates

Don't let a price differential make you think they are affordable. It's AU $177500 for an M3 wagon before options/on road costs/insurance. You'd not get much change out of $200k for one once you started driving it.

My M4CSL will cost me over AUD$340K (USD$250K) by the time it hits the road. That's USD$100k over what Americans pay for theirs.

For that kind of money, if I lived in the US, I'd be able to get the M4CSL and a M5 on top of that.

The current Alpina B3 has an S58 engine, albeit with a different tune compared to the M3.

No, since always I believe, it had the S58 before the M3 was even a thing.
