Personally I’m really curious to see if BMW doubles down on the styling for the next gen M3/4 but I think they’ll go back to something more conventionally recognizable as a BMW even if it is super modern.
I’d doubt it. Unfortunately or fortunately, the new grill is selling well. People vote with their wallets.

G82: Stock M4 Competition X-Drive on street MPS4S
F82: 634hp running E82 on track tires (Advan A052) and aero.

Best Lap Times:

G82
DK: 1:03.933
Nob:1:01.561

F82:
DK: 1:00.440
Nob: 00:59.735

Here's what I read from the auto-translate:

DK Impression:

G82:
Heavy
No translation for most of his impression.

F82:
Heavy but you don't feel the weight
Seems to like it more.

Nob's impression:

G82:
Each shift is strong
Front tires are grounding thin (?)
Doesn't turn in well.
No joy in running
Drifted around for a lap, so good at drifting?

F82:
Comfortable, calm.
Legs are easy to read? (good feedback?)

Final scores:

Nob 85

F82
DK 100
Nob 98

Interesting, I wish they did a stock for stock comparison, especially with the same tires. MPS4S, while good, are significantly inferior to A052 on the track, especially for time attacks like this. If you took a stock M4 in either generation and used 200tw tires like the A052, you would expect the 2-3 seconds faster laps that they recorded. Aero is helping the F82 immensely, as well as all the suspension and mods.

What this is telling us is that a modded F82 can be faster than a stock G82. What about a modded G82? I'm pretty sure the turn in on the G82 is sharper and more precise than a stock F82 simply due to the updated suspension and stiffer chassis. The added weight being the equalizer.

On track, I personally find this to be true. I'm not a professional race car driver like these guys appear to be, but here is my impression of my F80 and G82 on two of the same tracks with similar conditions:

F80 M3 CS vs G82 M4 Competition X-Drive: My Impressions

As far as looks, which seems to be the focus in this thread. The F82 is unanimously more loved. The G82 is not. My opinion is that I like how the F80 looks more than the F82 and I like the G82 with a wing more than a G80, F82 and F80. That is also largely because I've already owned two F80's and the G82 is new and exciting. It's polarizing, it doesn't align with the majority opinion, and maybe that's why I like it.

I thought the same about the first big-grill Lexus IS, but you know, that car still looks great to my eye. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that even a Prius is aggressively styled these days.

This is a weird comparison. The F82 has wheels, a massive wing, and it sounds like it has downpipes and I would assume a tune.

I would’ve enjoyed it more if it were stock to stock, but a great video nonetheless.

This is great. Thank you for breaking it down. The f80 also had 650 horsepower and the g80 was stock. I feel that is an important fact that I haven’t seen mentioned unless I missed it.

For some people yes, I was in market after a long wait financially for an M3 finally. Had to go M5 route after seeing the G80 images. I knew from the beginning that M5 is not going to be a long term car for me since it was too big, but did it anyway.
M2 might be too small/impractical , M8 too impractical in coupe form and too expensive in grand coupe etc for people.

[QUOTE=mirob;30287848]This is what I imagine the F8X boards look like every time a G8X story hits the front page. HATE HATE HATE.

However, not all F8x owners are hateful of G8x machines and I’d venture to say that their actually relieved and happy with their purchase… the G8x series could have been an awesome evolution of the F8x series which, notwithstanding the appearance and automatic transmission, it is! The Americans do it best, every generation of product is better looking than the last, the German’s have bucked that trend a couple of times in the last few decades with a brilliant reversal of that strategy, ie, allow little 12 year old Tomas to pen the overall strategy. Hmmmm That does sound negative or hateful but I concede that there are no objective measures of beauty, save all, or most, of the worlds automove journalists who disapprove of the G8x series’s appearance and the use of an automatic transmission, but what do they know, losers!!

Usually pissing off a majority of your reviewers and customers with an ugly mug isn’t a great plan for a multinational.
Pleasing MOST people is usually what should be the aim. People are buying a product, not following antics of a celebrity.
G80/82 wasn’t the massive success some of this forum members want it to be when it came out. After first month I could get one with any of my local dealers at MSRP. Try getting a 911 at MSRP even now, let alone 2021. Even the lowly cars like Audi S4 were going on mark ups back then
Also for reference 911 and M3/4 were both selling little below MSRP before COVID.

i don't think anyone will be surprised when the f-series bmws go down as some of the best looking cars ever made, whereas the g8x will go in the same category as the bangle boys

and i drive a g87 lmao. if the f87 came with the modern features, you bet your ass i would be driving one

Sales speak for themselves. I'm sure that's what BMW is concerned with, not with what some random dude on the internet/forum thinks is, or is not, aesthetically pleasing.

As far as M3/M4 going for below MSRP before Covid. Yeah, maybe the F82, F80 was out of production by then.

Dude, who cares about Porsche? What does Porsche have to do with anything? I shouldn't have to explain how that's irrelevant here.

Audi? Please stop. Dealers were marking up Tellurides well before covid. That doesn't mean shit.
