The big grills are selling pretty well. You have to add up the 3 and 5 series sales together to exceed the 4 series lol.

It's like this every generation as far as I can remember (the naysayers not the sales). Sometimes it does feel a little like SupraForums of the '00's in these threads. lol

I have owned my G82 since Oct '22 and I distinctly remember hating the look of the front end of the car when the press photos first came out. While I recognize that some potential buyers hate the look so much that they'll never consider buying one, obviously that wasn't me.

I don't think it is particularly arguable that the G8X is a better performer. And while sound hasn't been a strong point of the M3 since maybe the E90, I also think the G sounds better than the F. But if you simply can't stand to look at a car, that's a good reason not to spend nearly $100k on it, everything else aside.

Time will tell, but I think the overall dislike of the looks will fade with time for most of the public, just like it did for me. I happen to really like the look now, especially in black (gratuitous pic):

I honestly think the dislike for the looks has already faded. If anything, the F now looks tame and dated in comparison to the G…. Which isn’t a bad thing by any means. The E30, E36, E46, E90 all look dated and far more muted too compared to modern cars which is a great thing. The F8X was considered quite aggressive during its lifecycle and I’m glad it’s now transitioned just as the rest of its lineage.

But when the G8X is measured against its contemporary competition I think it’s easier to gauge how much of an accomplishment it truly is. Think the G82 is heavy… google the weight of the GT500. Think the G80’s idrive is too digital… look at what the C63 is doing to the entire powertrain. Not happy with the G8X “rubbery” manual transmission… the other car brands didn’t even show up to the party. Don’t like the G8X grill, huh… Audi I’m looking at you with this one.

The very fact that we can have these ///M vs. ///M generational arguments is a massive compliment and testament to the cars’ greatness.

When people complain that the G8x is too heavy, I challenge them to find another current car in its class that is lighter (or at least notably lighter comparing apples to apples, X vs RWD, etc.). Even the new Mustang is 3900 pounds so the weight argument is nonsense imo. Yeah, compared to its predecessors, it has gotten heavier but so has every other car. The G8x is lighter than most, if not all, of its competition. Weight gain may suck but the G8x is not some outlier here like haters make it out to be.

G8x hate only seems to be present on these forums, not in the real world, at least as far as the general auto-enthusiasts reaction to the car and many BMW owners old and new. Admittedly as a 6 year F80 owner, I wanted to believe the design criticism and on paper/screens it seemed justified, until I started seeing them in the wild, which took far too long given supply constraints. But once up close and personal, and certainly from an overall design (exterior/interior/tech perspective) I felt ready to move on, esp wanting to get back to a manual from a DCT, as good and unique as it was. Wish I could have kept the F80 along side the G82 but that just wasn't a possibility. Cars do need to be considered in their time and I feel so fortunate to have one of the last manual RWD coupes available - not sure there is another car on the market quite like it. Enjoy the last vestiges of ICE/turbo manual goodness, if that's your thing. Almost feel a duty to keep the dream alive for a lot of the small segment of young guys into their manual cars and what future they might have and for how long.

At least in my area (Portland OR metro), the part of the local BMW community that shows up to CCA events might as well be these forums. I've had the, um, privilege to own the first G80 that dared to show up to our local Bimmerfest in '21 and most the BMW CCA events since then. A few more G8x cars have joined the fun to take some of the heat in the years since.

The F8x folk are absolutely the most vocal when they don't realize their talking about MY car...and one dude tells me how much he hates it every single time I go to one of the shows.

But:

MOST of the attendees actually hate the F8x cars, too. I've heard two owners of not-terribly-well-kept e39 5's (not M5s...) absolutely shit on a gorgeous blue M2CS that always shows up (I love that car). They aren't fond of E6x and E9x cars, either. The amount of venom available for any modern or near-modern BMW is utterly hilarious.

I honestly think we should split BMW CCA events at around the year 2000 (maybe 2004).

And other car manufacturers...you don't have to buy one if you don't like it. I'm sure BMW won't miss them.

BMW owners are like Porsche owner-lite with the snobbery and resistance to change. Underneath the curmudgeonly crusty exterior, is a car enthusiast just like the rest of us.

I've been around car nuts since the DMC-12 was new, so I totally agree. The line between the two sets of BMW nuts is just so stark. But at least we don't get into fist fights over deviated stitching colors.
