M4 vs M8
I know two totally different cars in different price ranges, but I am considering an M8 as my next car. I did drive the M8 at one of the M track days and pics of, but that's it other than seeing it in person a few other times. Has anyone owned or had a good amount of driving experience in both?

Honestly, I was kind of bored with it. Outside of the raw speed (and the good exhaust note) it kind of seemed a bit soul-less to me. I loved the luxury, but I really didn't find myself dying to get back behind the wheel to drive. I have an allocation for a G82 Comp. AWD, and I'll most likely go through with just because there isn't much else out there. I am going to test drive a few things, but I don't have much hope that they'll pull me from BMW.

It was just fast, but it seemed heavy to me and didn't really seem fun to drive unless you were blasting off from a stop light. It's a great highway cruiser, but just didn't do it for me. I really regretted selling my Imola F80 after I bought it, and I never really felt like it was the right move.

The M8 is sweet but is it just me, or does it already look a little dated? It’s weird bc the 8 is a relatively recent model, but something about them looks a little dated to me. I think the gran coupe looks more current than the coupe for sure. I’m weird.

Check out posts by Vic55 as well. He has had many discussions comparing his m8 to his g80 (and now the g80x). His opinions seem to echo the luxury/gt feel of the m8 being less exciting to drive vs the m3.
My guess is the m8 drives closer to a m5. Brutally fast straight ahead, but a lot of mass, and just not engaging for the driver. But, more room and long haul comfort than m3.

snareman https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...ighlight=vic55 I honestly still would rather drive my G80 than my F93 but you are looking at a coupe which has different dynamics than the GC. I chose the GC over the coupe because of its unique lines, look overall, and the menacing approach in BSM. Oh I also bought that GC with 1500 miles in Dec of 2020 for 103k with an msrp of 154k. That was the time of the floor of luxury BMW values--- today Ill walk away with a 130k or more on this same car with 4800 miles. I dont know if I would pay 130k for my M8 today with what the amazing G80 S58 brings to the table and its improved luxury inside. My opine owning both. Its worth saying that Im not as biased as one that may only have one or is really only wanting one and looking for answers to push that bias over the top (not saying this is you Snareman) but Ive witnessed this over and over here on the boards where someone will come to ask thoughts and then get thoughts they didnt want to read. Bottom line, if you like change, and want a faster GT car, the M8 coupe is solid. This of course, with money being not being an object. I was on hunt for the M8 Coupe but only mildly back in Oct of last year because even with the flagship monies, rebates, and discount, the car was still running around 13X and I just felt at the time I would take a bath on a flip. Then my wholesaler calls me and said he found a guy in a 1 pay lease who didnt want the car and said he would buy it for 100k off him and I could get it for 103k (he needs to make something). 1 day later I was an owner.

I'd never considered an M8 for several reasons. It wasn't a feasible financial option at $150-160k. I also thought they were going to get rid of the coupe permanently when it disappeared for a year since many other brands were doing the same. And also having never seen the 8's in person, but based on the price and fact that the number was higher than 7 which was already a huge car I assumed they were going to be a boat cruiser old guy country club car. But then the coupe reappeared as a still quite expensive, yet potentially doable for me price $20-30k cheaper car, especially with the prices used cars for my current M4 these day to help with the down payment. And then I saw one at M Track days in Indy and discovered that they are not a yacht cruiser, but rather a svelte sexy coupe, and if you cover it in laguna seca paint it makes it that much hotter. It was lust at first site. I looked at the 840 and 850 when I was waiting for an M4 allocation, but the non-M versions just didn't do it for me. I love my M4, the way it drives and especially the color, but as time goes on I find that I give it a lot less 'look backs' than my F82. While the grilles weren't the design I'd have picked, I don't mind them, think they fit with the car and definitely look much better in person. So given all of the above I started considering an M8 much more seriously, odd/wrong as it seemed to me only 5 months into owning a new car that I planned to have for at least 3 years before thinking about something new. When my parents were shopping for one of their recent Corvettes they asked to drive one and were told no by multiple dealers despite the fact that they are an upper middle class couple who drove in in a Corvette and said we want to buy a new one. One sales guy said, if you're interested in buying a Corvette, driving one isn't going to talk you out of it. That has some truth I suppose and I think I'm in somewhat the same ballpark with the M8. I absolutely love the looks of it, love the idea of a V8 and some of the increased luxury and B&W stereo compared to my HK. The car is never going to see the track and for the average daily Ohio driving I do I can't see the extra 500lbs talking me out of it if I can get a decent price for my current M4 and a decent deal on an M8.

The opinions above are all interesting to read. I drove an M8 (on the street, not track) and it's a fabulous car. I have driven my M4 on the street and on the track, and it's a fabulous car. The M4 is more comfortable, easier to get in and out of, and cost less. I also got three pedals, which you can't get on the 8.
The M8 looks better and has a nicer interior. It's also a lot more expensive. And the depreciation is staggering. If I wanted a slushbox and the prices were the same, I'd go with the M8. As prices are now, I'd go with the M4 with no regrets.

Well, this is from my poor memory, but I believe that the M8 is lower and the roof is as well (shorter height overall). And as "more comfortable" I mean that in comfort mode, the ride is more forgiving on the 4. Of course, I did not do a side-by-side comparison, so I could be wrong.

Well, I could get it on an M8m although the thing is already damn expensive. Still waiting to find someone that might sell me one.

I really don't want to feel like I want to get rid of the M3 in a year or two or 5 months. Having said that, I think the M8 looks fantastic. I wouldn't want the additional weight, but if money were no object I would choose the M8 over the M3/4. |

Not an M8, but the dealership gave us an M850i as a loaner for a week while they were working on my wife's X7. It drove well enough, but the interior was pretty tight for the size of the car (just looking at the front seats, back of the 8 series coupe is a joke) to the point that my wife wanted to take my M3 everywhere. I didn't find the interior to be any more luxurious than my M3 and definitely a tighter squeeze to get in and out of especially in parking lots due to the size of the doors. In general it made me feel a lot older driving around in it.
My feel after a week was thanks, but no thanks. First, every 8 series looks the same with no real body differentiation from the M to the standard car. I love the wide fenders on the M3/4. Second it feels like a German Camaro to me. It is a huge car with very little interior space and limited sight lines, very fast in a straight line but doesn't encourage the driver to throw it into a corner with abandon. FYI I previously owned an F90 M5 which I believe is the same platform. Fantastic car, but doesn't have the same feel as the significantly lighter G80. If I was looking for a car to drive to the office daily then the M8GC would be fantastic. Looking at balancing daily driveability with enjoyment of some canyon runs I am going G8x every day of the week. If your motivators are different (everyone's are) the M8 is a very nice platform, but once I step over the $100K mark I am buying a base 992. More than enough performance for the street and significantly better driving dynamics 8 days a week. |
