The new W206 AMG C63
Maybe I'm being shallow.... but I just can't see myself spending $80k on a 4 banger. Even if the performance is up to par... in the back of my mind I'll always know I've got a tiny little 2.0L 4 banger under the hood.

its gonna get heavy too being a PHEV ... W205 gen C63 is already at 4000lb... this next one is gonna push 4500 ?
given the next RS5 will prob be a PHEV too (see the facelift Panmaera 4S hybrid powertrain for an idea) .... G8X should be the lightest car in its class by a mile

And BMW breathes a sigh of relief that M3 and M4 sales will increase despite their best efforts!

As far as I'm concerned, while the look might not be for everyone, the G80 with an inline 6 with a 6 speed manual is an awesome combo that's very enticing (especially in this day and age)

AMG has world superiority in electrified FI performance engines as proven by many years of total F1 engine dominance. They know the technology for sure and I expect the C63 engine to be best in class.
But...compare today’s F1 engine with any of the pure ICE V8s, V10s and V12s before it and it’s an enthusiast tragedy. And that’s a six cylinder. The 4 cylinder FI F1 era was more defined by its supreme drivers and dangerous conditions than the engine character. A four banger is no go for me. Rather buy a Taycan or a lightly used NSX when electrification is the only choice. Here’s for hoping BMW stay with an I6 as smallest M hybrid ICE engine. A 4 worked in the E30 but in a car twice it’s weight and size, no thanks. Last edited by solstice; 02-12-2021 at 07:39 PM.. |

yea so the rumor is that the W206 C63(e?) will feature the F1 derived e-turbo that is said to eliminate turbo lag entirely .. pair that with the M139 4 pot used in the CLA45 and a PHEV system ... I don't doubt they can push over 500hp and have e-AWD, but where's the V8 growl

Squeaky interiors and the awful screen set up they have and now this. I'd buy a Tesla before I bought a Mercedes, and I hate Tesla's.

I have no issue with 4 cylinders, many of the best performance cars ever produced are 4 cylinders such as my RS275-R for example, BUT what I DO have an issue with is 4 cylinders in big cars.
My AMG A45 was a great 4 cylinder MB but this C class MB is just way too big for a 4, even with hybrid assist.

I don't think this 4 banger C63 will sell well in the States. In Europe where tax on the G8X is 20k due to emissions? Probably pretty well.
My Mini is a 4 banger and feels like a little tractor. I could not care less of the C63 has 800hp out of a 4 banger, the experience is crap. The more cylinders the better the engine feels. I won't drop below 6 for any expensive car, period. |

Agreed nothing wrong with turbo 4 cylinders in the right cars. Like TargaM2 the turbo 4 in my wife's GLA45 AMG is fantastic in a small package. Whether the C/E63s are the right cars will remain to be seen.

it will crush new m3 for sure, 4 cylinders still better than full electric, it wont be 4400, 4 cylinder is less than 8 cylinders weight...

Staying with MB, on the E-Class the whole hybrid module adds 800 lbs to the same engine (2.0 4 cyl), the 3.0 6 cyl is definitely lighter than the 2.0 hybrid. Even the E63s with the big V8 is lighter

honestly amazed at the engineering going into these cars, have no doubts it will pull very hard, biggest question mark is weight.
But again they have to really dig deep at 1) achieving as high of boost mode power as possible and 2) market the sht out of "F1-derived tech" so to get people's attention away from the fact that the car has lost literally its defining trait. In 2y time when AMG and Audi RS release their next iteration of C63 and RS5 to compete with the G8X, the former is now confirmed to be I4 PHEV, the latter most likely a V6 PHEV, we will have some very interesting comparisons at hand. Certainly the proving ground for electrification in more mainstream performance market.
