2023 BMW i4M50  [0.00]
As always, this is probably BMW marketing getting ahead of engineering. The release of this video probably means we'll have to wait anything from a month to a whole quarter before we see the update available in markets other than Germany.

I don't understand why they promote the maps as something new. I have the 03.2020 and I have the exact same maps. It's anyway based on Here maps, and that means it's hit and miss. The same with the personal assistant, the eDrive zone, the "remembering your habits", which really means opening the windows, and so on. I don't have Android Auto, but at least 50% of what they show in the video are features delivered with previous software updates.

I haven't been able to find the documentation of exactly what is required, or if the APIs are even available to third parties yet, but Waze and google maps will need to be updated with support for the second screen experience.

Great, thanks! Looks like it's using the internal BMW text rendering to display the directions and arrows, but getting the info from CarPlay? It looks similar to the current HUD nav info. I should look at the CarPlay APIs to see what can get passed to the HUD.

Yeah, the text rendering appears native in both the live cockpit and the hud. In the live cockpit it shows like a stack of cards with the subsequent directions behind them. It would be interesting to see just what info can be passed

Per this WWDC video, looks like HUD info is only metadata: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2019/252/

Curious if the instrument cluster has any different type of display, as per the video, it could potentially display a second CarPlay screen of h.264 content. This is dependent on the vehicle manufacturer and not Apple.

Beat me to my own response, but yeah, seems like the instrument cluster over time could get more detailed, but the HUD probably won't ever get more details than text and arrows.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CarPlay/com...in_the_driver/ I didn't take a picture of mine but someone on Reddit did, this is what it looks like on that screen

For those that can’t see the update it isn’t out in the US yet. Starting tomorrow is EU release.

iDrive 7 became available with cars starting build late september 2019. So there are 2019 registered cars with iDrive 7.

So, for Google or Waze to display in HUD, who is responsible for getting done? Waze/Google, BMW or Apple?

I think Apple should have approved it since google maps can show up on the split-screen in CarPlay after iOS 14 ( before the split screen page only allowed apple map I remember )

You won't get it. My G30 MY2020 (production month February 2020) does not get it. Production month has to be July 2020 or later. Having said that, I still love my G30 :-)

Tesla still doesn't have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The thing that's missing from this update is google maps support for heads up display on iPhone, right now it's only supported in Apple Maps, or Google Maps but only via Android Auto. What would be nice in addition is some additional horsepower and torque with the update like Tesla.

You don't have iDrive 7, so no.

I don’t think that’s correct. My reading of it is that all iDrive 7 equipped cars will eventually get it - it being the 07/20 firmware update - except for cars built after July 20 as they already have the update straight out of the factory. There are plenty of examples in the US where iDrive 7’s have been updated already to 07/20 spec after complaining to their dealer of problems. Perhaps they got the Beta version and this is now final version.

That's not true, all iDrive 7 "lite" cars can be upgraded but you'll need to visit your dealer in order to do so. No OTA because of hardware limitations. So G30 MY20 can get some of the features like CarPlay HUD
