Auto start/stop for 6MT?

The 6MT image in the configurator shows an Auto-Start/Stop OFF button on the center console. How does that work with a clutch and manual transmission? I always assumed you couldn't have Auto-Start/Stop if you had a manual.

I have that on my 6mt M2c. The engine shuts off when the clutch is out and the cars in neutral... even while still rolling... it's annoying in traffic but apparently is effective at fuel conservation at the 4 second mark...I would guess it's regulations driven as its kind of silly on a car with dual high pressure fuel pumps.

Fuck that would annoy the shit out of me. I hate that auto on/off on cars nowadays.

Pretty standard stuff here. In neutral and at a stop the engine goes off. Comes back as soon as you depress the clutch pedal or now also when the car sees the one in front move off.

When car is in neutral and stopped the engine is off. Turns back on once clutch is depressed.

And I assume you can turn this off, and that it will remember that you did so on next car "wake-up"

My M240i 6MT has auto start/stop. When you get down to around 5mph in neutral and off the clutch, the engine shuts off. As soon as you're on the clutch again, the engine starts back up.

Note that if you put it in a gear when the engine shuts off, putting in the clutch won't wake the engine, you have to pop it in neutral then back to 1st. It also doesn't activate if you come to a stop in gear with the clutch in, presumably because you're just coming to a stop sign and need to get moving again quickly.

Hah, I’m the exact opposite! It’s the only thing I miss from my other, newer cars while driving my e38. Especially hate going to drive-throughs with it, when the stops are too short to kill the engine, but too long to feel comfortable having the engine on.

It’d have to be a tanzanite blue Touring for me Upholstery would be a difficult one though. Usually go for black on black, but the yellow/blue upholstery looks so good!

I turn mine off on my 340 Xdrive 6sd most of the time...as I worry about the longevity of it. I know the B58 was designed with this mind..but still.

However, if I get stopped for a training crossing, or Drawbridge going up, I will pop it back on.

For me, I don't ride ride the clutch, when a light goes green I quickly clutch, 1st in, blip throttle, clutch out...and the stop start delays it just a little bit to be annoying.

I turn mine off. Besides the "annoyance" factor, I worried about wear on the starter

It’s so ridicules that they manage to program this auto start stop shit on a manual and yet they can’t give us a simple remote start because the car has to be in neutral... how stupid is that. 🤦*♂️ I really hope someone will be able to code around this problem.

Yeah, this not a thing to be upset about. If you switch it off, it’s off until you you switch it on. I’ve had my F80 MT for over six years and I had auto on/off on for 5 minutes once just to test it out. Had a good laugh and never turned it on again

Remember last setting for auto stop/start died with the F3X/F8X generation. US regulations do not allow the manufacturers to claim the fuel mileage benefit (maroney and cafe) unless it comes on every start. Will need to be coded.

On the plus side the latest systems are worlds better. I drove 2020 m340 and x5 and it was much smoother. Add fast forward to this year and the 48v mild hybrid in the 2021 B58s and I couldn't tell other than the engine sound it was there.

However on my f30 6mt I did find I would just hold the touch down at stop lights more often just to leave the engine running if I forgot to disable

Sounds like my next car will be the first I’ll have to get coded...

I could see the benefit of mild hybrid for auto tranny but for MT it's no use at all.

This was standard even on the E9X M3 after 2011, it was set to off by default

You can also turn it off permanently via Bimmercode or Bimmerlink.

I don't see this as stupid and certainly would not code around this "problem." I have manual and always park the car with the transmission in first gear. This, I understand, is standard practice, and it also gives added assurance that my car won't roll while parked under any circumstances. I would not trust the parking brake alone to firmly hold a car parked in neutral.

Even if you don't normally leave it in gear while parked, the fact that you can and if you do it even once, it could be costly to remote-start it.

It's actually way better than on an automatic for reasons mentioned above. Only stops the engine when you're clutch out in neutral, starts back up again by the time you can get it into gear to move.
