Horsepower and Torque increases on gauges
After my 1000 mile service, I would watch the HP and Torque gauges on the IP. Floored, would get up to about 515-525 HP and 500-510 foot-pounds, but never anywhere near the 560 max. With 2700 miles on the car, checked it again. Now showing just below the 560 on the HP and ~ 530+ on torque. Was really surprised, but thinking about it, the car does seem quicker to me. I had put it down to cooler weather before checking the gauges. Dynos here and a dozen plus on the web show the car is making 550-560 at the crank; 530+ for torque. It's no joke. I'm at 7000', so 550 + is outstanding!

Assuming these are like the hp/tq "gauges" on my old 340/M240... those gauges are software-driven and I'm pretty sure are just tied to a pre-programmed map of engine RPM to hp/tq "output." The car is not actually performing an internal dyno test, nor are those values likely to be accurate. They're eye candy, but basically worthless.

I hope this post is a joke because the car doesn't make more power after the break-in service or X miles

I was told by my SA that part of the break-in service was a software update to "unlock the full power of the car." I won't know whether that was true or not, but it's what he said. I'm not sure I could tell one way or the other because I don't go hooning around.

you do know, when you look at your service invoice and you see there is no software update listed on there.

I'd give them the benefit of the doubt that they're confusing the fact that you can hammer the engine all the way to redline after service, which indeed produces more power than limiting revs. But obviously it's not the service itself that's unlocking any magic capabilities. (Nor should the output on the "gauges" be any different... but since that's just software, maybe there is some Easter egg in there, who knows?)

The motor will loosen up as everything wears in together up until about 5K miles. So yes, the car will get quicker but it is not a SW update. The change is purely mechanical in nature.
Back in the day you could see it in the C&D long term tests. Cars were regularly a few 1/10ths quicker at the end of the year vs initial delivery. |

I'm stating a fact I observed. Previously, the hp gauge would only go to a certain point. For whatever reason, it now reads substantially higher. I don't know, nor is it pertinent, whether it is correct or to what it is connected. Merely an observation. On LS engines, the car was not completely broken in and didn't achieve max HP, until 5000 miles. That is a different engine of course, but as engines loosen--any engine, they do make more power, sometimes a lot, sometimes a little.

It would give new owners two new goals. Get a high score on drift analyzer at maximum HP and torque. I mean what could go wrong? |

Am picking up the M4C in a day or two so can't talk about the car. Can talk about the tech though.
BMW does have & has used the capability to limit power/torque till specific goals are met. Its strictly automatic. My 335is had a factory built in temporary 50ftlb torque increase (boost) on WOT acceleration. This feature was locked out till the 1200 mile break-in was completed. Tested just before & just after 1200 miles rolled by on the odometer. No doubt the car was stronger after 1200 miles. Feature was mentioned in the owners manual.

On their motorcycle the S1000rr the bike is restricted until the first service. As others have said; the increase in power is really accessing power you already had. Except you were limited by the recommended restrictions of not exceeding a certain RPM. VW made a performance pack GTI. It made a little more torque and little more HP same engine as the base. So who knows what happens when your car gets scanned after 1st service. Cars also have a break-in period… |

I don't disagree with you, as nothing happens except fluid changes. But, there was a change in the gauges. And, a dozen+ dyno tests show crank HP is ~ 550-560. Didn't show that high before.
