Rogue “coolant low” error?

Just got in my car to get a sudden “low coolant” error. Shut car off, looked to see I do have coolant, turned it back on, error went away. Drove home at very moderate speed and watched engine temp and it never went above normal nor did error come back.

Anybody have any ideas? Worry about it? Take it in?

When the car cools down check both of the coolant bottles.

Happened once with me, had to top it off a bit. Dropped by the dealer and they took care of it promptly without an appointment.

I got the same random message. I checked the upper bottle on the passenger side and it was below the minimum level.

Where is the other bottle?!

Just had this happen with my F90 M5 last week. Took it in and they determined it was a bad sensor in the coolant expansion tank. I was pretty concerned too but it was covered under warranty.

Just checked… bad news is it looks like there is almost none in there. No spots under the car and nothing appears to be leaking?

Might be leaking into the engine. The F8X had a problem with TMIC leaking into the engine.

Car appears to have green coolant but according to autozone I should be using blue? But here the green coolant is listed for “Asian vehicles”?

So dude at autozone swears I should be using the blue and even looked it up… but I am positive I see green in both. The green coolant here specifically lists Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, etc. anybody help? If I buy the wrong stuff I’m really in trouble.

You will get plenty of warning if your car is getting hot.

Swing by the BMW dealership and get their stuff.

And, yes, you and your car will be fine if you have to do it tomorrow.

That makes sense but if the coolant really is that low is there any chance of damage before the car throws a warning?

Just add distilled water to get it up to the proper level. Buy a jug of coolant at the dealer. Don't buy the stuff at an auto parts store unless absolutely necessary.

Which reservoir was empty? If it was the one on the passenger side above the turbos that’s for the engine. If it was the one on the drivers side by the oil filter that’s for the I/C heat exchanger loop.

Don't get car advice from autozone, please. Just go to the dealer for a bottle of coolant.

Reason I went there was because #1 it was walking distance from my house and #2 dealership was closed and I didn’t want to risk driving it on low coolant.

Brought it to dealership today and they said it’s normal apparently? But I made them give me a bottle of it to go to keep in my car just in case. And I will be monitoring it closely the next few weeks.

For reference, it was the engine coolant, not the heat exchanger coolant.

It shouldn't be normal but mine was topped up recently too, both were low.
