I live in MN and the auto climate control seems to function perfectly for me. I would complain more about physical buttons but honestly I set it on auto and maybe move it a degree or two depending on the day.

I never thought I’d say it before I started using the car & ID8, but it doesn’t matter to me at all when the auto setting is this good

I think the physical button ship has already sailed and there's likely no going back now.

I would be a lot less happy with the setup if I didn’t have the iDrive controller by the shifter.

And yes, based on the videos, I would welcome iDrive 8.5 over 8, and would pay to upgrade. I am hoping once the LCI is released with 8.5, the aftermarket figures this out and its not punitively expensive.

Then why bother with the survey question? They have to at least be thinking about it.

Yes please physical buttons! I hate every car going the tesla minimalist design. Vegan leather!? Unacceptable I demand 100% bigfoot leather.

I hope you're right, but I suspect any return is likely to be on the margins, e.g., climate control or the like.

Yes. The only time I get frustrated is trying to put the car into manual mode by turning off the auto program and put the air toward my feet (I wear wool shoes and sometimes on long trips they get hot). In the old days BMW had a hybrid auto program where you could change the flow but keep in auto. I wish we could have that back. Or perhaps it’s user error.

Making adjustments is much worse with the touchscreen and you’re completely right, I think the only auto changes you can make are between “balanced” & “dynamic”. I haven’t looked up what the differences are specifically, but they feel almost exactly the same to me for everyday use.

The seat heating is something that should definitely always be on the screen like the temp or just be a physical button. It mostly does a good job if I set it to low and forget about it, but sometimes it’s extremely cold and I want instant fire on my backside 😆

What is the basic difference between 8 and 8.5?
After doing a little YT research, I like the ID8 homescreen better. I use the knob anyways…. And the shortcuts.

Agree. I don’t live in a cold climate. But BMWs auto climate is not good. I have to constantly adjust the desired temperature to get the car to heat or cool.

My F150 has been set to 72* for 3 years and it’s always perfect. Defroster, mirror and rear window defroster, foot heating, ect. all automatically turn on when needed.
The only thing they messed up is the seat heaters don’t turn on with auto start. But they do auto turn on as soon as I get in the truck.

Smart truck. Seats shouldn’t heat unless there’s a person in the seat

I think the touch screen is more distracting as a driver bc you need to take your eyes off the road more. With the physical buttons you can do a lot more by touch.

No issues with less physical buttons. Heating/AC are very easy to use with iD8 and even better with 8.5.

Im pretty sure based on their last NK concept you'll soon have to turn the heat down through a sassy voice assistant and AR acid trip displayed on the windshield

I very much agree that some physical buttons are needed in a car. Ok - so when it all goes autonomous in the future, then touchscreens will be fine, but when you are concentrating on the road it is really difficult to fiddle with a screen to get to the right menu. I am a big fan of the iDrive 7, for me it works really well - although I appreciate that others have a different view.

But what type of menu do you “fiddle” with while driving?
All the main stuff right there easily accessible, like radio, CarPlay, GPS, climate control. I don’t know what else you need while driving.
If you trying to find some setting in some menu maybe it should not be done while driving.
I have idrive 7 in X5 and idrive 8 in M3. I just don’t find myself pressing buttons in idrive 7 all that much. I just don’t get what’s the to fiddle with.

I dailyed a Model 3 for 4 years. The no buttons at all thing is 95% set in that car because the software layout is so good.

IDrive 8…with the controller and the excellent steering wheel controls, I can do almost everything I need to do except for switching things through CarPlay. I wish the menus were a little straight forward and we didn’t have all those icons….lists are better. But after dealing with Tesla, the BMW is a breeze.

I took the survey and also indicated that I would rather have buttons for the A/C controls. However, I will say that so far it’s not all that bad with iDrive 8.5 in my X5. It’s taking some getting used to but I can see how after some time it will become something that is quick to adjust when needed.

No chance the G01 will get iD8. It’s already a hacked together iD7 implementation since the platform dates back to 2017.
