Will they listen? RE: Physical buttons

Just was asked to do a survey, and this was one of the questions.

Look at how VW is totally reshuffling their interiors again because they are getting torched with bad feedback on their deletion of physical buttons. The market hates it (for good reason) and I hope BMW listens.

I don’t get the hubbub about physical controls for climate control because once you set it, you should forget it
It is automatic after all

I have iD7, so I’m good (for now), but I’ve never found the automatic strong useful. At least not here in SoFla.

When you live in a really cold climate the auto climate control can't seem to ever get it right. Sometimes you need your feet warmed when you get in and too often when you set it to auto if doesn't turn the windshield defroster on. In cold climates you're fiddling with climate controls constantly.

I don’t care about physical buttons. I have not cared about physical buttons since I went from a BlackBerry to an iPhone 😉

This!
I feel auto climate only works 90% of the time, and there’s always that time when I feel it’s not warm or cool enough to keep up with the huge temp swings we have here in Colorado.
It’s not a specific problem to BMW, also happens with my wife’s MDX.

I do not need physical buttons either IF the os is optimized and tested for real world human interface. iDrive 8 is horrible climate control wise. This is why 8.5 was released. My 24 M240 does not have 8.5 and it just plain sucks. I could get used to it sure but why should I?

Human form factor seems to be taking a backseat to innovation. For example, I do not feel the tech is there for EVs yet. CERTAINLY at least in the US, the infrastructure is not ready. Yet someone somewhere said its cheaper to run and better for the environment so people ran with it. Physical controls are one of many interfaces which connect a user to a thing. The more direct connections you remove and you are no longer driving, you are being driven. That is what the future of most things will end up being and that is great. I am all for innovation but when I design a thing I make sure the use case does not leave out the user. I wish more would do the same.

Physical controls are always more intuitive and far safer when you are driving at the same time. The iPhone argument is a poor one. Touchscreens do not belong in cars.

Will BMW? Since they asked, yes.

I don’t use Auto so I prefer some sort of simple way of adjusting fan, temp and location.

Me neither. Even if you need to change your climate settings, it's pretty intuitive as the climate menu is always readily accessible at the bottom of the screen.

Yeah, this approach of following Tesla into no buttons has been a mistake. If Tesla hadn’t done it successfully, others wouldn’t have followed. That, and the supply chain issues acted as a catalyst.

At least we have a bunch of buttons left in our BMWs. The problem really is that once the buttons are gone - or once the interior can’t be differentiated from, say, Tesla …. besides the horrible build and ride quality and lack of luxury features (and an ICE), the interior on a BMW or Mercedes or Audi et al needs to be unique and special, not 100% software driven through an iPad.

It’s taken me a couple years to get used to iD8 but iD8.5 is very intuitive. They do take my eyes off the road a too much (even DAPP yells at me when asjusting the climate control), but I’m getting better. The biggest problem for me is when I’m doing manual climate options - there’s probably voice commands that I haven’t learned yet.

But the new screens are very slick and have great resolution. I even went back to iD7 but am happier with iD8 the second time around.

I am 70% blind in one eye and the touchscreens are a little tricky for me because my up close depth perception kinda sucks. I've got the iDrive 7 and I'm happy to have at least a few physical buttons. It's got the right mix for my broken ass.

I'm likely to pick up an X3 of some kind by the end of the year, but unclear if the switch to iDrive 8 is happening by then. If so, not a big deal...but prefer the 7

I agree I don’t care. BUT I want to be able to access climate menu from I drive controller knock by the gear shifter. Why can’t u click down and go into climate menu. U can click up and go into shortcuts but no click down. Only way is to touch? Or am I just slow and can’t figure it out?

Somewhat agree with this. The automatic gets it right about 90% of the time. I just have to adjust the temp periodically.

Exactly. I went five months without going into that menu. When it turned cold, I popped in there a couple of times to fine-tune my heated seat preferences. Now that I've got that sorted I'm back to letting the car handle it for me.

Disagree. It gets plenty cold in Chicago, though admittedly you've got a little bit of an edge on me in that regard. In my E46 and E90 (so going back almost 25 years here), I changed my temperature up by 2F in the "summer", and back down 2F for the "winter", solely to account for the lighter/heavier clothes I wear in those seasons. Never touched it otherwise. Worked perfectly in those cars, and works perfectly in the G80.

Yes, even when it's -30F/-34C.

Front and rear defrosters have hard buttons, even with iD8, so that doesn't count.

I don't think they will go back to physical buttons, I think we will see more of these screen stuff get implemented into everything

Think about it, with everything in one they save on design, save on r and d, save on warranty repairs, less parts to have to deal with

Companies are all looking at Tesla, so blame them for where they are going, part of the reason I would never get a Tesla, they take a big slab put it in the car and charge the same price as other car manufacturers

I bet the profit margins on a 96k Tesla plaid vs a 96k M3 is drastically different

BMW is looking at Tesla, that's apparently worth 600B vs them that is only worth 60B, they need to catch up, raise profits and lower costs, if I was BMW I'd be pretty upset with the current situation

Sorry for the bad grammar, writing was never a strong suit
End Rant

I'd have less of an issue with the entire setup if the system weren't so damn sluggish at bringing up menus. If they just spent an extra $10/car to put a better CPU in these HUs I'd have less of an issue.

I like tech but not having physical buttons for the AC is big downside for me. I hope BMW is listening. Porsche got it right and that’s a manufacturer who used not really focus too much on ergonomics.
