Carbon buckets vs comfort seats
Hey y'all,
So I'm currently in the market for a g80 but can't decide if I want carbon buckets or not. I love the way they look, but I'm worried about the comfort of them after long drives. I go to School in Az and my family lives in Ct, which means I drive across the country at least 2 times a year. Would it be comfortable spending 30+ hrs in them or should I opt for comfort seats bc of this? |

A search should bring up plenty of similar discussions. It ends up being personal preference and your best bet is to try our carbon buckets from a dealer inventory (new or used) or bmw track event.

Given than you will be driving long distance, i think the the standard seats would be better. The carbon is a shell and doesnt offer any lumbar suport or any sort of adjustments except for side bolsters. Also getting in and out might be an issue with the sides raised. I had to turn down a new M3C that i really liked due to the buckets !!!

The carbon buckets are one of few well priced options out there. These are literally 10-12k per seat aftermarket and I feel they make the car so much more special. I added them to my spec last second.

M3 is going to be my daily so I opted not to. I've sat in the sport seats and thought they were perfectly fine for me, and I don't add the $4500 cost

If you love the buckets, get the buckets. I certainly wouldn't base a decision on such an expensive car around having to take 1 or 2 long drives a year, the other 95% of the time you'll be doing shorter stuff and love having them.
For the long drive, maybe take a pillow for your back.

Most I've done in a single drive is 2hrs but have had zero issues with the carbon buckets for comfort. I'd opt for them again in a heartbeat.
With the long drives you face, they may not be the best but how often will you truly be doing long drives like that? Maybe 4 times a year? Besides, do you really plan on driving straight through and not stopping much?

OP - this is probably a good video to watch (I'm sure its been linked before):
I've sat in Carbon Buckets, I'm 5'11, about 175lb. I found them very comfortable but the only thing that I did not like is the thigh bolsters (and my legs are on the skinnier side fwiw). I ordered the sport seats on mine and I wish I had gone carbon buckets. Few reasons: 1) If you were ever to purchase them after market, I believe they are sold for like $18k. 2) If they are truly that uncomfortable, I can almost certainly guarantee someone on these forums with the same color interior would be willing to trade with you. |

Buckets and more Buckets
I didn't intend to drive my M4 daily, and I opted for the buckets because they made the car feel special. It turns out I love it so much I try to find reasons to drive it daily. Yes they suck to get in and out of, especially if you wear a skirt, but when I'm in I know I'm driving something special even before I hit the 'loud' pedal.
Its an experience thing ... there is no right or wrong answer.Bucket seats are awsome 2942846[/ATTACH] |

Cool seats, glad I got them. But also glad I have something else to drive for longer trips.

I really want to order the carbon buckets when I place my order in the fall. A lot of the decision is going to come down to the wife's approval and how comfortable they are for about 4 hours.
I went on Turo and there are a handful of vehicles local to me that are equipped with carbon buckets, so when the time comes I will rent one and the wife and I will take one out for a day and see how well they work for us. This may not work for everyone, but here in Socal we have lots of vehicles available to us. |
