Damn broad day light too SMH.

How hard is it to steal these cars if you DON'T have the "code" from the key fob?

Like can they do it the old school way, break the window and fiddle with some wires and shit to get it started?

Or are these thieves ONLY relying on either getting your key fob code or simply car jacking you in person at a gas station/out in public lots etc?

lol so i guess it's a blessing and a curse for these newer cars with all the electronics.

How i wish BMW incorporated something like tesla's sentry mode. I feel more safe parking my model 3 anywhere than i do my M3 in my own damn driveway now

I feel somewhat more secure because my Tesla is the first car parked in my driveway so if anyone tries to get into my driveway has to go next to my Tesla and once that happens the car records 360 degree. It’s fucking cool.

Only thing is I need to get into the habit of checking the footage. Sometimes I get the notifications but I don’t view them smh lol

But not all faraday boxes are created equal. The one i bought on amazon, some people have tested it somehow. I figure if thieves have access to these scanners, other regular people who aren't thieves can too. But one amazon person took the box with the fob inside and walked up to his car and the car wouldn't unlock (like with keyless entry). But perhaps some cars are better than others as well with this type of safety/signal? I don't know.

In the end, i think if someone wants your car they can get it. But i think these faraday boxes, or even wrapping that box in foil like i did, can at least help. Or maybe make the thief think twice and they can move on.

But around where i am, if someone wants your car they'll get it without you around or in front of you, with force. Which happened to my friend with his scat pack. 3 dudes literally took it by force.
I did a quick test with a faraday pouch from Amazon and worked pretty good. I walked upto my car and it didn't unlock, I took it out of the pouch and the car unlocked. I have 2 pouches, one for the spare key and one for the regular one that I keep in the house.

Wow, just seeing this. That's crazy. What store in Red Bank? My guess is the other end of town by the Windmill. Downtown itself is pretty safe, but can't say so much about "the other side of the tracks" in Red Bank. Literally.

Gotcha. Know the area well. Newman Springs Rd not far from Brookdale. Wow, still sucks. Crazy how bold these idiots are getting. No fear of the law since covid.

Yeah, definitely time to break out The Club. They would totally not know what to make of it. Desperate times..

Lol exactly lol I remember back when I first had my mustang, I used to take the relay out underneath the seat… so even if they got in they'd never start it lol.

Question for those of you with the latest BMW models and features.

Is it possible to deactivate keyless entry with a fob and only use your phone (digital key)? I assume digital keys use much more advanced encryption and can't get "man-in-the-middle attacks" like the ones discussed above with the wireless fobs. Then you can unlock with your iPhone and Apple Watch (or android equivalent) or whatnot same way you pay for your coffee.

I am waiting for my 2023 so I'll try to do it when the car arrives but in the meantime curious if anybody has tried it.

Not sure if you can deactivate the keys aside from removing the batteries? But god forbid you lose your phone. Lol.
I just think bmw and other brands need to come up with some sort of theft proof device or addition to the car to prevent these relays from grabbing our signals.

Everyone should watch Trafficked on National Geographic. It's two seasons, and Marianna goes to Newark and west Africa to go inside the car theft rings. Etc. the one on theft is season 2, episode 7. It's on Hulu and on demand but the car theft one wasn't on demand for some reason. I watched it on Hulu.

Every time the car companies come up with new tech they screw up. Especially when it comes to security.

In a few years we'll be getting access to everything through our phones/watches. Apple announced "Home Key" so smart locks will be opening through phones, your safe will open with your phone, subway, your office building, everything. This is a solved problem so they might as well use the existing tech.

By the way, I don't know about Androids, but did you know that the newer iPhones can unlock stuff even when out of battery? They use a totally independent circuit that works even at very low battery levels, when the device overall is dead. I can even pay the fee at the NYC subway with my phone out of battery using a limited version of Apple Pay.

Omg no… although now that you mention it I think my friend at bmw told me this. I asked if battery died and he told me something similar. It's crazy.
On that show Trafficked, they know where all the modules are in any car that deactivates the on star or GPS, crazy. All makes and models. Mother fuckers lol 😂

If you wanna go into somewhere and leave the car running. Shut off the car and use your remote start so all security feature are in place

I think this defeats the purpose. If you leave the key fob exposed still, the relay they're using to steal the cars will still be out there open to signals and it can easily be picked up. I don't use the auto start or running with car locked feature anymore. Not in my neighborhood anyway with all this theft going on.
