What really disappoints me is if only 50 variants are being made, why couldn't they have just gone all out and stayed true to the original 3.0 CSL Hommage concept? Now that was a truly stunning car. If the i8 could be so similar to the concept, don't understand why this couldn't. The fact it just reuses a bunch of parts from the G8X parts bin just makes me even more disappointing. Seeing the two compared really shows me how bleak the production model is.

Don't hate it, but disappointed.
It's used the G8x body-in-white, so there are still hard points on the frame they had to adhere to. The concept I think was based on the F8x frame or even the M6 frame at the time.
fair point, but if the concept was built on another existing bmw chassis that makes it even more disappointing. I know hardpoints are a limiting factor. but man if you're gonna make a $750k car, don't make it feel like an M4 with a body that looks adapted from another car.

What happened to the transaxle setup ?
There is no way this car is three quarters of a million bucks. (US$) 250k is more realistic.
Its nothing more than a tarted up M4CSL with a manual box & some carbon panels fitted.
So much for the hommage bespoke supercar…what an absolute cop out by BMW.

Looks like somebody got described the Hommage Concept over the phone and then went on to nail bits to the body of an M4.

Imagine what you could do to the m4 CSL with the spare change from giving this a miss. Actually, the M4X Comp even.
Can't see past the stock lights being wrapped in oversized body parts to make it work. I also think it's a dated looking design given what BMW are currently putting out.
And what's the point of this car anyway?
It's (for me) not a 50th photo I'd want hanging up, and let's be honest that's about as close as you'll ever get to seeing one every day in your garage.
They could have and should have blown us away with a proper lightweight CSL that has its own specific parts, not the Gxx parts bin that this is.
Oh, has anyone seen what Porsche can do with the GT3RS….. and that's a car you have a chance at.

Yea and my gt3RS is coming in June 2023. This car is a paper weight aka space filler. Damn shame BMW. Had you of truly made a bespoke m4 I would have considered it. For now i will still wait for the true epic super car from bmw.

Opportunity missed IMO. That original CSL Hommage is abolsutely amazing. When I saw it at the BMW Museum earlier this year I must have spent at least 30 mins just taking in the details. Absolute perfection. It was based on the F 6 series platform so naturally lower and wider which lent itself well to the desired silohuette.

Starting with the M4 CSL already makes it too high and narrow. It also seems as thought there is nothing extra over the M4 CSL in terms of driving dynamics.

I've heard rumours of other "coachwork" built cars that will follow so will be interesting to see what those are.

At $750k I can think of many other BMW's I'd have over this. Its a moot point though as all of them have been sold already to pre selected buyers. I personally know of 2 people so will get to see it in person at some point.

I actually think the opposite. This confirms BMW isn't full of it when they say the 6 spd as it is isn't meant to handle the higher hp/tq of the g8x comp models.

In this case you have a $760k which may not come with a warranty and only 50 are being made as an obvious collectors car. So sure, let's throw some extra hp at it since it probably won't be driven as much, but notice the torque figure is the same as the regular g8x 6mt.

In contrast, when you have mass produced g8x 6mt cars which have lengthy 4 yr/50k mile warranties that need to be honored, you ensure the power output to the 6mt is tweaked for longevity.

Now if bmw gave us a 700 hp and 650 lb/ft monster to their 6mt... then maybe we'd have a different story.
Of course they "can" source a manual transmission to handle the big torque of the newest M Comp models. Dodge has been doing it with the Viper for 3 decades, and the latest ACR has 600lb/ft of torque.

The problem is that we are a small subset of people that actually want a manual, so it doesn't make financial sense except in a super low production, very expensive halo show car. I'm not sure if this transmission is any different than the base M4 manual, but I would think it is.

I would rather see this as an M2 based car weighing under 3,000 lbs with 100 less HP. Obviously that isn't the direction BMW or most other manufacturers are going, except maybe Lotus. Still, I appreciate the effort here, but I would never buy it unless I already had 25 other BMWs and a similar amount of Porsches.

I really like it but it just emphasizes how they should of offered the M4 CSL in manual guise. The 3.0 offers no performance advantage but justifies it's price by bespoke body parts and ultra exclusivity.

Think of it as a 50th celebration build and everything will be fine.

FWIW, I think there must have been some restraints with the original Homage prototype, otherwise, as Imran@Evolve said, why build this over that?

It has more power but basically the same engine, pretty much the same car as the M4CSL with a lighter gearbox and given all the CF around it, should this car not be at least 50 or more kg lighter than the CSL? It weighs as much as the M4CSL, so what accounts for the extra weight?

Agreed, though interestingly the C/D article merely speculates the price may be higher than the standard M4 CSL. I guess we'll see.

Either way, given the extremely limited production run, I suspect these will be stored as garage queens and command a couple mil at the 2040 Concours.

The CSL hommage is available in 1/18 (released a few years ago). Here is the M version.

I think the people who ordered that car already have a few million invested in cars and various toys. They are not exactly on any kind of budget.
More like a got to have it purchase regardless of price…
It's a museum piece. BMW profits 10 million doing this for posterity, but not an attempt at a feasible exotic. M3/4 CS and M2 CS will have to suffice (and those aren't that exotic either … maybe GTS again one day?).

The resemblance to an M4 is misleading. It doesn't take 10 days to build an M4; and they definitely can make more than 50 M4 in 3 months. This car uses a completely different assembly process and location.
Quote:
The production of all [50] vehicles will take around three months.

…a team of 30 specially qualified and experienced technicians is responsible for the configuration and assembly of the vehicles. Due to the complexity of the processes in the manufactory, each BMW 3.0 CSL passes through eight assembly cycles at just as many production stations, a procedure that takes up to 10 days in all.

All in all, the extremely high proportion of individual manual work means that the time required to assemble a BMW 3.0 CSL is many times higher than that of a conventional BMW M automobile.

It's a carbon fiber build, long process.

Exclamation

For a 3 quarters of a million dollar car I would expect bespoke everything on this car.

They couldn't even give functional aero on the hood!

It should be a 1:1 replica of the concept car, not a M4 with a tacked on body kit, and you still get single rear caliper brake! For $750k USD! 🤣
