Back to Back Test Drives of M4 Comp and M4 MT
I was curious to see the differences between the two as I really prefer a manual transmission but based on some of the reviews and comments here, BMW hasn't invested much into the 6MT and maybe the automatic would be best suited for this car. After driving them back to back, I felt a significant difference between the two. I found the comp to be more twitchy (the rear end really liked to spin out) and the ride to be more susceptible to feeling imperfections in the road. When driving in the 6MT, I felt the car was more willing to be driven slower and the ride quality didn't suffer from poor road surfaces. The 6MT was still very exciting but just didn't seem like it was on steroids and not in a good way. Did anyone share my experience? I know it doesn't make sense considering the two cars are suppose to be identical in build form (except the tuning of the engine) but I couldn't help but notice them to be very different.

The 6MT isn't going to feel remotely as frantic under moderate to heavy acceleration because the gearing is a lot longer than the narrowly spaced gears in the 8AT, especially gears 1st through 4th.

Definitely enjoyed the 6MT. I felt that it would be easier to live with everyday.

Interesting take. The assumption is you liked the Comp because it was “on steroids” compared to the base. Personally, I’m looking for something that “becomes an extension of your body” so to speak. Overall control is more important to me than raw speed and that’s what I’m hoping the 6MT gives me. So you would pick a base?

MT has just to be driven differently.
I drove both, the ZF has 8 Gears so you get the car also on low speed to high HP/Tourqe. For me: MT all the way, in higher speeds it makes much more fun. But yeah, a track is needed for a car like this if you really want to have some fun. But accelerating into the highway is quiet fun too |

The suspension components are supposed to be identical so any perceived differences were the result of other aspects of the car. The way a 6MT's suspension reacts when you let go of the clutch less than 100% smoothly will always make you aware of the suspension in ways you would never be otherwise.
Think you're the first person I saw drive them back to back, thanks for the write up brother.

The comp was so tail happy. Every time I put the pedal down the rear kicked out. I could also feel every bump in the road which some may prefer. The MT didn’t spin out. It felt like the car squatted and took off. Could also be due to my MT driving abilities.... Whatever it was, my preference was hands down the MT. Long live the manual!

I'll second the opinion that the tires weren't set correctly. When I left the dealership yesterday following the break-in service, the paperwork said they set my tires to 33/35 (which does not match what the door sticker says they should be at). They actually set them at 33/37. Never trust dealerships to set your tires correctly.
