1. Aesthetics: I much prefer the look of the M3 over the M4. Personal preference of course!
2. Utility: I have two small kids, so getting them in and out of an M4 would be a PITA.

I have two small kids and this will be a third car for us (my wife and I have SUVs) so I am going for the M4. If this were my daily driver, it would be the M3. The key for me is that unlike a p-car, I still have the option to stick kids or adults in the back of the M4 when needed.

It both surprises me that it's that lopsided and also that the public votes in the opposite direction.

M4.
1/ a Sports car should not have 4 doors.
2/ If you want practicality, get yourself a SUV.
3/ 3/4 rear panel on the M4 is brutal as it should be, alluding to those Ford Falcon Coupe from Mad Max. Immediately gets a tick on my world.
4/ Frameless windows are sleeker.
5/ Rear lights aren’t trying to be Audi-eque as per the M3’s.
6/ Wider and lower hence “sportier”
7/ I’m biased and owned coupés all my life, I’m 40 with kids and I won’t compromise on my aspirations just because wife wants more comfort.

Note: The votes aren’t representative of the future sales of both cars, BMW will sell more M4s than M3s - I’d bet half of the voters drive 116d.

picked M4 only cuz i really wanted a 2 door with frameless windows .. I have no real utility for rear doors (or rear seats for that matter..) so that wasn't a big deal either way

Funny enough, BMWs builds twice the amount of M4s, 2 to 1. You'd think it's the opposite.

Went for the G80 M3 purely for the manual transmission. Picked up my Dravit Grey with Kayalami Orange in the beginning April from Beverly Hills BMW and have been in love with it since.

I'd be curious if those who say M3 looks better have seen both in person. M4 presents very well in the metal, as does M3 but I feel like M4 is more striking.

There's a few reasons for this. 2 being

1) the younger population prefers the M4, coupes have a cool factor and we don't need the extra space. The younger population also doesn't spend much time on these forums unless it's on classifieds (as someone who's under 30 and know dozens of M owners I know this for a fact)

2) I've noticed that the more of a car enthusiast you are, the more you tend to prefer the M3. Lots of random people who buy these cars just to own an M who have money and don't know a whole bunch about them ger the coupe, because they didn't know the sedan rear flares were its high point they just thought "
It's a cool M car I should get the coupe not old man sedan" you don't notice these things until you see the car extensively and someone tells you the sedan has crazy flares then check it out yourself and realize better looks + practicality makes the sedan a better buy (subjective, I'm still an m4 guy)

Let's say the f80/g80 didn't have those crazy arches in the rear fender, I think we'd see a decrease in sedan sales. Not a crazy difference but would be there.
Definitely other reasons out there.

I thought the F80 looked substantially better than the F82, but I have the exact opposite thought for the G80 vs G82. I am going with the G82

Noticed a few comments on how they will sell more M4 than M3 (on the G8x run).

Just because this was true with the F8x, I'm not exactly sure if it will be the case here. Do we have confirmation they have made significantly more M4 than M3 so far? I know discounts were a lot steeper upon release for the M4, and not sure if they were slower to move because of the increase in volume produced, or the lack of interest.

I for one loved the M4 over the M3 in the F8x. However, I am polar opposite for the G8x. (I don't even need 4 doors)

In what way does the M3 not have a middle seat? There are three seat belts for the back.

M4 is better looking, imo. Never a fan of 4 door sedans. Don't need easy access to rear seats. Sports coupes are coupes--especially coming from Sports Cars. Sedans just never did anything for me, although, if you have to have one, the M3 is probably the best looking out there.

Sure, there's a seatbelt, but with the hump you sit on and bench width I don't think it makes it much more comfortable for 3 adults than the rear of the M4 would.

Even though I really like the M3's front and rear fenders, I think the M4 is sportier looking. Yes the fenders are not as pronounced on the M4, but this is due to it having a wider body to begin with, which in my eyes gives it more stance. The M4 being slightly narrower at the front and wider at the rear than the M3 further contributes to that impression.
Again this is the kind of things that has to be appreciated in real life as it is the most accurate way to properly assess how the proportions and volumes work together.

The m4 just seems so long and such a large car. It needs 4 doors to justify the massive size of the car otherwise it just looks out of proportion. Neither the M3 or M4 are purpose built sports cars so might as well go with the cheaper, better looking, likely more rigid, easier to take to the track, and more convenient and practical m3.

It is still too early to say that this will remain an ongoing trend with the G8x chassis. However, at present time there is significantly more allocation for G82 M4 over G80 cars.

They need to bring the 6spd rwd M3 touring stateside. They are under estimating how many people will actually buy this.

I fell in love with the F82 when it came out and I really wanted it. However, I had an old car that was paid off and running fine, so I kept telling myself that I would get an F82 once my car broke down, but it never did. However, last year it started having some minor issues that would end up costing more to fix than the car was worth. Timing was great with the G80/G82 coming out.

I was considering both the M3 and M4, but after years of owning a sedan, I realized I RARELY ever have anyone in my back seat. It's just me or ONE other passenger almost all of time, so I couldn't justify needing another sedan. Opted for the G82, but I have one issue against it vs the G80.....the body lines. I really like how the rear fenders are pronounced on the G80 and you can immediately tell it apart from a 3 series. Especially since I have a BSM G80, it's not immediately apparent to a casual observer that it's not just a standard 4 series.
