AWD M3 or X5 M plus track car?
Spent last weekend honing around NJMP-T and was told by many people I should consider an E36 M3 track car. I will probably hit 10+ events this year so it may be worth it, trouble is I don't have anything that can tow a car/trailer.
So here's where I am at...keep the G80 AWD allocation and use that as a daily/track car, or get an X5M with a Steath hitch to lug around my track car. No I can't get both a G80 and X5M, and no I don't want an F150. What would you do?

I don't want to deal with having a larger vehicle than I need and also buying a trailer, storing it, maintaining it, etc. That why my "track car" is still road legal without a roll cage.
The E92 can fit a set of 19" wheels, a tool box, full size 3 ton jack, two jack stands, folding chair, snacks and drinks, canopy (which I've stopped bringing), two helmets, several pairs of shoes, and a duffel bag with clothes. Loading and unloading is a bit of work but overall much simpler and quicker than towing. So get a track car + G80 |

I will have done between 3500-5000km ON track during the ownership of my M2 (around 36months) and you would barely be able to tell it's been on track by seeing or driving it. Proper care and maintenance is the key but remember an old beater track car will have plenty of old stuff to attend to, very different experience than a new car.
I know other members do way more than this and still drive there family to the restaurant on Friday nights. It's the beauty of M cars. I have close friends who have track cars, some are so deep into the rabbit hole that throughout the years they spent the price of a new M2 on them. They still only enjoy them 2-3% of the summer season. And they don't even do competitive events.. Just giving some insight on the différent aspects. There is no right or wrong here it's really what fits best what you want to do. Like me I was storing my M2 for winter and realized I kept wanting to enjoy the car so the G80 will be used all year. Put your priorities on a piece of paper sometimes it helps make a decision.

How much driving on the road? Do you have a long commute or work from home?
So many options here, but 10+ track days, I would want more focus there. Based on the choices you presented, I would go X5M + E36. I would also let my mind wander to something like a 996 GT3 + Civic TypeR or 330i, etc. So many options. |

So $130k for X5M plus what for track car, $20-40k? Plus hitch installed, plus trailer. That's a lot more budget than a do it all xDrive M3 for some $90k.

I think the idea of tracking a new M car is cool, especially if you're not really racing it or trying to set lap times. If you're having fun, that's a different story.
If you're trying to get the most out of it and chasing time, I think it makes more sense buying something dedicated for the track. The reason I say that is you're probably going to say something like, "well, I could shave a few seconds off by changing the brake pads...well maybe the rotors too." "I bet if I remove the seats and get some lighter wheels, that would help." Once you start that rabbit hole, it would be cheaper just to get something smaller, lighter, and something you don't mind experimenting with rather than screwing up a perfectly good road car. Plus, the road debris and rubber on that brand new paint? Ugh.

It's a tough one. I think this depends on the level with which you track.
I bought a truck last year for renovation and for towing my built E36 M3 to the track and thought that it worked for me. For a while. The issue is that I started out thinking that I could attend 10-15+ track days a season and go out of town often. Turned out that I couldn't. In reality I attended closer to 6-7 a season with the desire to stick around my family and friends for summer weekends instead of always being gone. There is also the hustle of getting a tow vehicle, getting a trailer and upkeep on a track only vehicle. If you are going to commit to as many days as you'd like go SUV ( save your money and get a regular X5 ) and go for a track toy. But if you will show up 2-3 times a month in your short driving season like I do, something that can be driven there and back AND enjoyed in between is what makes sense to me.

Well...I pulled the trigger and didn't really stick with the original plan.
Went from an AWD M3 to an RWD M3 + Toyota Tacoma + Track Car & Trailer. All in all, I think that is the best compromise I could have come to.
