Is it worth it? BMW M2 vs BMW M3 CS (Joe Achilles)

Joe takes a look comparing the £65k M2 versus the £120k M3 CS.

“Worth twice the money if you can afford it.” Aye, there’s the rub.

LC on a manual seems like a silly concept.

Looking forward to seeing the M2CS.

LC is silly in general unless the driver is unable to launch on their own… 💨

True launch control (DCT) can only be done with LC. Usually there's no way to drop the clutch at 5K in neutral.

Now that LC has been added to torque converters over the past ~5 years, I agree it's silly. Really just brake boosting.

It’s definitely not M DCT, but I will say it’s actually quite good for what it is.

It’s actually a really good change in mode 3 and it’s fast but smooth. It’s not as fast as the DCT (hardly noticeable but just) but a hell of a lot smoother in its fastest setting, it doesn’t unsettle the car like the DCT does.

The ZF8-Speed doesn’t feel like it’s going to blow the f’ing gearbox up in sport-plus like the M DCT

I could never figure out LC in my e93. Resorted to destroying the tires instead with my own fun ideas -traction off, DCT in 6th setting (IIRC), stomp on brake, load up and try to tame the beast. I’m sure that wasn’t a great idea either though. Maybe twice in its life.

Really good video by Joe here... the comparo between a shorter chassis and a longer chassis on identical roads speaks a ton.

It really tells and reminds me of why I would not want a short chassis car like the M2... it also reminded me of the faults of my old m2 f87... in essence, in the video, the M2 was bouncier, snappier and just less stable than the m3... it didn't really offer anything over the M3 outside of price. What i take away from this video is that the best middle ground is something like a G80x comp... in this video, it seemed like Joe didn't want to say anything bad about the m2 so he said it was good enough for the price but in reality it came off as being wildly subpar to the m3.

Yes, chassis and wheelbase. When I went from the M3 to the Z4 - and the Z4 has approximately the same wheelbase as the M2 - the snappiness and driving dynamics caught me off guard. Once you figure it out and adjust for it, it’s fine and definitely fun. But I prefer the stable and on-rails M3 myself! I’m sure the F87 was even wilder.

The F87 was WAY worse... its not built on the newer more stable CLAR platform... and the 265 rear tires were just way too narrow for the car... to this day, i don't know where that car's praises came from.

Do you feel this way about the CS also?

I've not had the opportunity to drive an m2cs... altho i wish i could because many say it fixes all of the issues... an adjustable suspension w less bounciness, better wheel and tires w more traction and other improvements... altho at that price point, again a g80x sounds better to me as a more complete car

Thanks. I considered one on carsandbids and one on BAT. Ended up with the same conclusion but based on inference - the M2CS seems like a smaller version of our F80 comp, which we had previously to the G80 comp x and then G80 manual. $80k+5k fees so $85k for an M2CS seems like a bit much relatively. Sticker for a 4 year old car.

I had a F80 M3 and the F87 M2 CS. The M2 CS was a way better car in every dimension. That said the G8x clearly moves everything forward with the exception of the transmission which I think is a big step backward in driving fun (compared to both manual and DCT).

Good to know on the first bit.
Agree the G80 ZF8 transmission is not great… had the comp first, then the manual. Get the 6MT, it’s more fun and engaging. And mileage is about the same for me- actually a bit better. Blame it on my more chill driving

Last year at BMW M Track Days (COTA) we had the opportunity to drive the new M2 on the track, along with sessions driving the M3 and M4. Both the M3 and M4 had XDrive, so maybe that made a difference, but I was not so impressed by the M2 on the track. I'll have another chance to compare them at the same event in July.

In a previous year we drove the F87 M2Comp on the track, and I really liked it because it reminded me of driving my E36 M3 on the track, but with double the power and much better grip.

We've run both on the track at buttonwillow and the G87 was a bit of a disappointment, in my opinion.

Mani, would you be able to help fix my issue with being unable to DM? I've had 2 successful transactions but can't leave or be left feedback.
