No LCI can fix this.

Give it a 3 year life, and hire someone to get our favorite car brand back to where it belongs.

I just cannot understand how one could fail so hard as this. It is beyond comprehension. Don't they run this by some reference groups of people?

This photograph has been HDR'd - enough said
I like the color but -

Yes the pic does look a bit strange.

Front bumper is slightly different color than the hood.

And looks pixelated
The guy who took the photo sent me the original
Interesting it does look like the front end is ever so slightly darker than the hood etc.

I have heard of this with Frozen paint colors due to material differences taking up the matte paint slightly differently but not on gloss finish.

Awesome!!! I am actually in Shanghai now.... very tempted to go to Beijing and check it out but I am afraid they won’t let me sit in it anyways!

My first impressions:

-Substantial, the car looks planted and easier for a non-car guy to distinguish the difference between M3, M4 and other models.
-Unlike the previous model, which feels like a younger brother to M5 and M8, the new model looks more like a mighty brother of M5 or M8.
-I like the rear view of the M4 and its coupe silhouette, but the big-grill design looks better on the M3's more defined shoulder lines and more static taillights.
-The plastic frame underneath the body is somehow intruding, but it makes the car looks more performance-oriented.
-The exterior difference between the competition model and base model is less significant
-Both cars are not bad looking in person, but they are less elegant than the previous generation.

Attachment 2423889
Attachment 2423886

Some quirks&features:

-All front vents are real, I suspect there are designated air tunnels for cooling the brake. The side vents are fake, but they are essential for creating the side profile.
-The indentations on the hood are pointless, but not bad looking.

-The competition model has more carbon fiber, including the rear wing, rear diffuser, mirror caps, steering wheel panel, shifting pedals, CF bucket seats.
-Other than the rear diffuser, the plastic bar remain plastic in the competition model. I am not sure if this M4 has opted any extra CF parts.
-There is no visible CF under the the hood of the M4 competition
-Both models have CF roof as usual.
-The exhaust pipes of the competition model are black, and for base model they are silver.

-The tires are Michelin Pilot Sport 4s
-The front wheels have smaller rim than the rear wheels, like the new 992.
-The M4 competition in the show room has cinematic brake discs

-For the first time ever, M3 and M4 have power tailgate
-The base M seat feels similar to the 3 and 4 series, but gripper. The M seats are a little bit thicker but the rear space is plenty for me. (I am 170)
-The CF bucket seat looks so cool, it feels as hard as the previous model with ZCP package, but my body is more confined because of the center bulge when sitting inside.
-The shifting pedals of the M4 competition are carbon fabric with rubber insert and longer length. I think it is more effective for shifting on the race track
-The center arm rest in the M3 is missing, I am not sure if it is only for the pre-production model.
-The extended leather makes the car more on par with the more luxurious M5

Great coverage man, thx.
Did you notice anything about the pedal positioning?
Heel/toe in the manual, or left foot braking in the auto.
I find the F80 DCT (RHD) isn't good for left foot braking.

I just cannot understand how one could fail so hard as this. It is beyond comprehension. Don't they run this by some reference groups of people?

I have lived through all the M3 introductions, and they have all been received with awe and admiration, every single one. A slight disappointment over the E36 standard fenders, but that was all forgotten when the juicy E46 body came around. Then the E92 came, a great looker as well, and that awesome DKG.

To be honest - I feel it as a personal insult that this car bears the M3 badge.
Don't worry, they will not change it so you need to make up your mind and move on to another brand until they come up with another one. Regardless of anyone's dislike, how many renders and the numerous complaints about the weight, BMW will sell a s@#$ load of these cars.

Wow a personal insult? Very dramatic, don't you think? 😂

As much as people complain about it, there are many more who love the new design and will bring in many new first time owners to the brand. The M3/4 is not a pure sports car anymore, and that is by design. The new M2 will fill that slot in BMW's lineup.

In my mind, the M3 is the new M5. And for that, I welcome it. I can't wait to get in it and have it complement my M2C.

You can do heel/toe with manual. I heard that you can turn off the auto rev match without disabling the DSC for the new model but I didn't verify for that. For the M4C with CF bucket seat it is a bit inconvenient for left foot breaking because of the center bulge, but not a big deal for occasional race tracking.

Let's see if the new buyers > current M3 buyers. I think not but time will tell.

Launch colours i.e IOM green and SP yellow are particularly loud, IMO more subtle colours such as grey, silver, black, white, blue would complement the design elements better

The hood is useless, is non-functional and only there to fix the aesthetics for the stupid grill.

The placement of the manual shifter and the i-drive/electronic buttons is horrendous. So much for ergonomics for the manual drivers.

Crappy design execution-Check
Crappy ergonomic execution-Check
Longer/bigger car-Check

It's clear BMW targeting this car at a totally different demographic than previous buyers.
