Why are you purchasing a G8x?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Just wondering because this is the enthusiast minded forum for all things ///M.

Do you need to scratch the "new M car" itch?
Do you like the looks?
AWD?
The interior?

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not in the market for this car personally for a variety of reasons, but I'm curious as to everyone's else reasoning!

I'm intrigued to "scratch the new M car itch". I love my m340i and the M3 is just more of that.

That being said, I'm very aware of all the shortcomings with this new G80 (grill, weight, etc). I've got about a year and a half to decide, so I'm hoping real world tests and reviews help paint a different picture from what we've seen so far (although not much can be done about the looks).

I want the S58 in the smallest package ie G87....despite all the trashing on the weight of the M4/M3, it has a better power to weight ratio than the prior gen and is great value for performance.

Could do without latest styling, but you buy a BMW for the engine and that S58 is a material improvement over the S55.

Current F83 lease is up, time to order a new BMW M convertible. Just happens to be the upcoming G83.

Some of us are on the q3 yr lease cycle.

I've had my F82 for 4 years now. Bought out my lease that ended. I have the itch and like new tech and new things in general. I do feel like I should be more madly in love with the car for what it's going to cost, but it is growing on me. Also, there are no other coupes in this segment that are worthy of getting. I was going to do a C63AMG, but they decided not to bring those over.

I used to be the one to scratched new M car itch.
2006 E46 to 2008 Z4 M roadster and currently 2015 F82.
But this G,,, I am not sure about the whole new stuff including awful grill. (Dont really care about performance because M is Top of the line.)
I may like it in person who knows.
But for now, I will enjoy my paid off F82

I plan to get one in about 2-3 yrs. Still enjoying my F80 M3 but I was stunned (in a good way) by the 4 series concept and I definitely enjoyed seeing all the reveal pictures and videos yesterday and today. I can't wait to get an M3 or M4 and add that rear quad exhaust. Looks so good, particularly for a 4 door sedan.

My F80 is a 2015 so I'm also looking forward to the vastly upgraded tech. My only gripe was the counter clockwise RPM gauge and they've sort of alleviated that with the dual sided RPM gauge.

Oh, and I saw in Shmee's video that they installed the roof rack holes on the upper sills! Glad to have an M3 where I can install a roof rack to carry bikes and stuff. Truly one of the best all around cars available today... STILL with a manual! What's not to like?

Because I suspect that this will be the last generation of these cars to offer a manual transmission, and the gains in technology (which I interact with extensively while driving) likely outweigh the baffling appearance (which I don't interact with much at all while driving). That said, if the performance isn't there for the driving I prefer to do (very fast on twisty back-roads) due to the weight and/or the length, the scale tips. Will have to drive it to see; certainly not considering a purchase without direct experience given the uncertainties.

My F80 lease is up in March and I have just about every non-SUV M car in my sights, along with a non-BMW or two. I'm certainly a BMW fanboy, and my service center is just over a mile from my house, so while I am oft tempted to look elsewhere, I highly doubt I will.

I'll probably spend the next 6 months driving and struggling with my decision. The G8x should have been a nice mix of all the other current M cars, and it's close, but something is just sort of bothering me. No, I'm actually not horribly turned off by the grille, I saw the G80 in Isle of Man Green in person and was greeted by the grille head-on as I entered the tent, but I didn't really focus on it. It wasn't in the sense that I was trying to look away, I was more drawn to the color, the hard body lines, the seats, the wheels, etc.. I think the grille basically worked on the car, at least in that color.

My main issues are that I would rather a G82, but I like the look of the G80 better, and I would rather a white car (all of my BMWs have been, including the X7 sitting next to the current F80), but I like the look of the IoMG better.

I knew this all before the official launch, but seeing all of the options, while they interest me more since you can't get a lot of them for other M models (yet), they are really going to end up pushing the price of the car into the reach (within 10-20%) of an M5, a discounted M8 coupe (I'm seeing 20% discounts on 2020s all over the place right now), or a 'close to stripper' 992. I just really don't want any of those cars for their own reasons.

There's also the fact that I would rather AWD, but I won't be able to get that in March. So unless I could get an appealing and short lease takeover for an M5, M8, i8, or something else that interests me to hold me over until I could drive an MxD G82 and have a better idea on this and a few other cars, I'll probably end up overpaying for a G80 optioned all the way out sans-AWD, getting annoyed within a year or two, and getting a G87 M2C.

I happen to love the styling and all the changes they made with the exception of the weight increase.

I am a 6MT guy. I’ll get 2 G80’s over the course of this body style, and then I’ll get a G87 in stick and hang on to it until they outlaw gasoline. I’m thinking the G87 will be the last 6MT car BMW makes.

Surely there has to be a bit of insanity with this purchase. I specced an m4 comp with the ultimate pack (needed to make the looks tolerable) and it came out to £87605.. I then went to Porsche and specced out a base 911 (porsche code PM1UC3S7) and it came out to £91422. Now tell me with hand on heart that the driving experiences will be comparable, or the looks of the m4 really seduce you over that of a 992. For the final nail in the coffin, which do you think will pose the better resale prospect?

So I reiterate the question from the OP, why are you guys doing this to yourselves?

The only way I will go back to BMW for another m4 is if they discount it by £10000... Little hope for that.

While i've owned a dozen+ cars, and half of them Bimmers, I have never actually purchased a brand new car. I really love the looks of this new G82 coupe and want to somewhat mirror what I'm currently driving (E92 M3 coupe)....Grey exterior, carbon bits, 6spd manual and let's add some carbon bucket seats while at it !

It is very likely we will se significant discounts on the M4 a year or so after release. These are not limited edition cars and coupes do not sell, hence the huge discounts on M8s and their discontinuation.

I hear you about the 911. The problem is you're comparing it to a base 911, which virtually doesn't exist. If you add in even the fewest reasonable options, expect to easily tack on another $10K to the 911. If you want comparably equipped, you're easily at $20K beyond the base price and likely higher. Additionally, 911s do not have near the practicality of an M4. While not as comfortable as an M3, you can actually fit two 6 footers in the back seat of an M4. You also have a full size trunk. So, while people might cross shop these cars, they are actually quite different and really at very different price points.

Here in the U.S. I am anticipating that we can lease the G8X Ms for under $1K/month. There are no 911 leases that come anywhere close. Also, for purchase, assuming an $85K OTD price for an M4, with a 20% down payment, my monthly payments are about $1,200 based on my credit union's 1.99% interest rate.

For a 911 - I'm talking base 911 not even an S, assuming an OTD price of $120K with a 20% down payment (which would be $7K more than the M4), my monthly payments would be $1,700.

So these are really different classes of cars and hard to cross shop due to the price... at least here in the U.S.

Power to weight is a worthless compare now IMO. A new Camry is faster in a straight line than a late 80's 911 Turbo. Will anyone really notice a drop of 0.1 seconds in the 0-60? Unlikely.

Go drive a sub 3.5K lb car or even better yet a sub 3K lb car back to back and you will realize the fun you are missing on back roads.

He specced them both to his taste and the difference was 4K Euros. For a lot of people that would consider an M4, the back seats are for occasional use by their young children with their spouse's car used as the daily kid mobile. Even for a $10K difference I will go 911 over the M3 (I prefer the lines of the 4 door in the F80/G80 lineup).

Because I like it and I’ve been disappointed every time I’ve tested the competition. Seems like only P-cars fit my preferences as good or better than M cars but they can’t match the value.

Originally wanted a 992s. Conservative options list put me at 120k easily. Took a test drive that turned me off....harsh ride for a 120k car/some rattles, insanely fast to the point of being boring. Sounded like a vacuum. More-so than the turbo BMWs.

Really got close to buying a Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0. Badass car. Just a little small and impractical for me right now.

Mild interest in the new STi that doesn't exist yet. It's a little immature for me anyhow, but I briefly owned a 2018 WRX that was a little swiss army knife, pretty cool car.

Am really looking to stay within the 65-90k range, want something that can be a jack of all trades, do grocery getting, highway bombing, road trips, track days. 4 doors or hatch is nice. I'm cool with barebones builds and I can likely get this car within my budget without all the BS bells and whistles. 6 speed, RWD, just a couple options.

I'm buying into some of the engineering changes they've made, and the way the car looks has grown on me like a fungus. At this point, it has for some reason infected my soul and I think I must have it, something about the aggressive styling and wheel arches get me. At this point I need something aggressive. Too many needle dicks driving around these compensation trucks that look like they are going to swallow my car when they tail me. I refuse to buy into this truck thing that's going on right now. It's like a middle finger to these people, where I live - NO one owns a sedan anymore.

What really got me...was the nurburgring track testing vids. The car looked so stable, and most of all....the sound has really improved to my ears. From the front end...I can really hear that old sound I'd hear from the E46 M3 induction noise and a bit of rasp if I use my imagination. It's not even close, but it's way better to me than the 992 which just sounds like a tesla vacuum. I do hear a bit of induction noise coming from the front end of this car when it's getting the beans....

I take your point and agree that if you are buying this car, it's best to keep it light on the options list. As a sub £80k car it can make sense if the styling can be ignored (many wise people have done so before and been on to winners.. Looking at you R34 GTR owners) .

I prefer our f80 gen M4 to the 992S, partly because it is snappy and angry.. Much like an old 964 turbo. The new base Carrera has more character than an S, although less outright ability. For now I am keeping the f82. I still love it to bits. The problem will come when I put enough hard miles on it, and it runs into maintenance and reliability issues, I can't see what I would replace it with: the answer used to be simple.. Another m3(or 4).

Fingers crossed the LCI will save the day. And Domagoj douche bag will be fired.

PS. Most modern cars sound rubbish in Europe now due to emissions laws and sound regulations, the g80 is unlikely to fare any better this side of the pond

I do hear a bit of induction noise coming from the front end of this car when it's getting the beans....
I completely agree, except that I have 0 desire for a 992.

Personally I am waiting for G87, can't do the pig nose. Most will lease(rent) the G80/82 because they will lease better than the G87 M2 and deal with the styling.
