Steering wheel noise

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Having an issue where when I turn the wheel lock to lock I can hear a little squeal/whine coming from the steering wheel or column. Kind of like some parts rubbing together. I recall seeing somebody else post about this a while back but I can’t find it. Anybody else have this issue or know of a fix? Would like to avoid a trip to the dealer if possible, not too keen on having them take anything apart

are you sure it is not the noises of the motors turning?

When I use the Auto Reverse function, and the steering wheel moves by itself, I hear a lot of noise coming from the steering wheel. I always assumed it is created by the mechanism that turns the wheel, but I do not understand enough about the system to have an informed opinion.

I have come to accept it as a by-product of having the feature.

When I manually turn the steering wheel as I drive, I do not hear the same noises, so I am not too bothered about it.

I do not know if this helps, just sharing my experience as it relates to noise and the steering wheel.

My G20 has done this since new, esp. while maneuvering at low speed.

I think it's normal.

My G80 does this too. I just thought normal. I dont find it loud or annoying just believed it to be a 'feature'

Hm. Doesn't sound like it's the rack or normal operation to me, sounds kind of like thunder thighs in nylon pants. Maybe not that loud (it is pretty faint) but it sure sounds like something rubbing. I thought I remembered seeing an SIB about it but I'm looking now and don't see one. Maybe it was a post on here somewhere, I swear I remember reading about greasing something in there.

I've been hearing this since I took delivery 2 weeks ago. Just took it in this morning and the SA said it was "normal" and that it's just some materials rubbing together? Says he hears it on other cars as well. So I just left

You could say what I’m hearing is comparable to that too. But it’s only if I’m turning the wheel from a stand still. Not when I’m turning as I drive.

Same. If it's over 5mph I can't hear it

I notice this too. Really soft. Only when turning the wheel at stop or crawling speeds. Soft squeak or wipe? Sound. Almost like the sound it would make if I were wearing nylon pants and trying to sneak up on someone.

Is this just cold tyres scrubbing across ground? I’ve just put my summers back on and when leaving the drive I get a noise and can feel the tyres noisely skate over the tarmac. Outside temps are around 50F so not ideal for summers so very hard rubber.

Can you point to where you posted it?

How intrusive was the repair, how much did they have to take apart, do you know?

I thought about that too. Opened windows and tried to listen outside the car. It don’t think was coming from the tires.
