GoPro Track Setup for Carbon Buckets

Hey friends!

Wanted to post the setup I put together for my GoPro ahead of getting my G80 to the track for the first time at Thunderhill this week.

Without a headrest support to grab on to, I decided to go the suction cup route, but wanted something very stable and adjustable.

Components used:
- RAM 18" PVC with Single Socket Arms ($30)
- RAM Twist-Lock Suction Cup Base with ball ($21.50/ea - 2x)
- GoPro Handlebar / Seatpost / Pole Mount ($30)
- Formufit 3/4" Furniture Grade Black PVC Pipe (~1"+ OD) ($25 for 3x on Amazon)

If you want to mount it low using the shoulder areas of the seats, the 18" PVC in the kit from RAM is long enough. I also bought the longer ones from Amazon (that need to be trimmed) so I could mount a bit higher behind the head rests. Only test-fit so far, but that seems to be the better angle.

This position will let me center in the car, or slide towards the passenger side and face the driver a bit.

Overall, very happy with how everything attaches and holds. Will post an update and some videos after the first laps!

Used your setup as inspiration for my standard seat G80.

A bit wobbly as the anchor points are still far from the camera boom but nothing a bit of post-processing stabilization can't fix.

did some testing on this setup.
  • The tape i used on the PVC pipe wasn't enough to hold the pipe in place, so eventually the pipe turned down on the weight of the GoPro + DJI Mic transceiver in the hotshoe. I probably going to drill through the mount and put a M6 bolt + washer/nut in each side.
  • Having PPF on the back of the seats was really nice with 2 suction cups on there and not having to worry about marks on the carbon fiber.
  • GoPro, I tried 2k/60 with hypersmooth on. I really don't like this. its too smooth, no feeling of speed in the video whatsoever. I also want to try linear mode, wide is too much of the inside of the car. Sometimes the hypersmooth even pans around, which i believe also hurts the sensation of speed on the video.
  • Next time I am going to try 2k/60 (linear) with shutter locked at 1/120 and use ND filter to get the correct exposure on the road as well. also a different mic setup, the exhaust sounds hardly translate to what it sounds like inside the car, considering I have akrapovic exhaust + PSI mid-pipe + dahler valve controller (fully open).

Excuse my ignorance as its great you went to the trouble of so much detail in your post, but, what is the purpose of this vs a windscreen mounted camera?

So you see your hands and steering input in the video

in addition to seeing my hands, i like that i don't have anything hanging in my view while driving.

and subjectively, i like the view better.

i tried out linear, linear+horizontal leveling, and narrow modes. i like linear the best, as it still shows the entire steering wheel, but also most of the view is through the windshield. enabling any amount of hypersmooth on hero 10 results in very unpleasant looking race videos, IMHO.

Do you have any video recorded from this setup. Super interested to see what you capture from here..

i posted a video above of this setup in linear mode + horizontal leveling. its probably my favorite vs narrow/linear/wide/superwide .. i don't have any videos of the other modes.

and like i said, hypersmooth and horizontal leveling really mess with the video. you really need all that turned off IMHO. hoping to maybe get some more tests soon.
