Fun Enough? Or wait for M2?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I've only driven a G80 once since it's so hard to find them on lots. Coming from my Alfa, I thought it was a little sterile and not as much fun to drive. I've seen various posts on this topic, but I'm currently looking at 2 options and the second one is a little off the wall potentially:
Thoughts? I'm just a little concerned the G80 has turned into too much of a GT car at this point. Appreciate thoughts from current owners. Thanks! |

G80 definitely feels like a big sedan during everyday driving. It shrinks a bit when hustling through corners thanks to great front end traction. I wouldn't call it particularly exciting though, even in 6MT guise. I miss the ascending crescendo of my last car's naturally aspirated flat 6. Steering feel and sound are a step down from the Giulia while other things (interior, infotainment) are a big step up.
Personally I'm looking forward to getting into a more sporty (not necessarily fast) coupe when my kids switch to boosters. On the short list are the next M2, 992, and GR86/BRZ. If only the Emira came as a 2+2. |

wj100: With all due respect, your question doesn't make a lot of sense. Supra is a 2-door, 2-passenger coupe. If that's practical enough for you, go for it. The upcoming M2 will be a 2-door, 4-passenger coupe, albeit only for small passengers in the back. A little more practical, and definitely more upscale and performant than, the Supra. I suspect it'll be more fun than the M3, though probably only ~100 pounds lighter. The M3 is the everyday sports car, far more comfortable and practical than those coupes, yet still offering blistering performance when hustled. Maybe a little more clinical than the Alfa, but likely more reliable, and definitely more refined. So it really depends on what your needs are.

Considering platform sharing, engine sharing, and everything else that makes the upcoming M2 similar to the G80, it would make sense that unless they mess something up with it, the primary difference in "fun" will come from the shorter wheelbase. It'll be interesting to see how much it matters.

My guess is it'll feel softer but with much more grip around the corners. |

I personally prefer QV over G87 that QV has four doors (need that cause I am having a baby upcoming). I dont think you can find any 4-door sedan that beats QV in terms of driving experience in the market right now. |

For fun M2. Reasonably practical.
For practical reasons, G80. Reasonably fun. What's your priority? Can't have both.

I'm also considering the Supra in manual as well because I realized that a small dedicated sports car is more fun to drive than a sedan that's trying to be a sports car. So if you have the means, then having a pure sports car + an SUV for bad weather is a perfect combo IMO. I did drive the 2020 M2 comp in autocross once and it definitely felt lighter and easier to toss around than the M3 on tight corners. The M3 also is very sharp and handles beautifully, but it just feels like a bigger/heavier vehicle.

I think I'd rather have a loaded M240i than the Supra. The Supra has a very small and tight cabin. Same B58 engine platform and xDrive in the M240i. Reviews of the M240i have been pretty good. This M-lite vehicle could be quite the street machine with some bolt ons.

I had a Cayman then M2 and now G80 (others before it see sig)... my manual G80 feels just as fun as my M2 did. Yes, it's bigger than the M2 but as someone said it shrinks around you when hustling it. The front end grip is mega!
It won't rotate like my Cayman did but overall it's probably my favorite car since my E92 M3. The sound it makes isn't as good as that car, or even the Cayman but I've been pleasantly surprised with it. My F80 was terrible sounding in comparison. The M2 feels punchier around town with the torque wave down low but runs out of steam up top. The G80 torque comes in higher up in the rev range but pulls all the way to redline which I love.

I'm pretty certain a G87 will be next for me after I get bored with my G82 in about a year

OP here with an update. I just took delivery of a Supra 3.0 this evening. I ended up getting it for MSRP and got such good value for my QV that, with the tax credit, it just seemed like a no brsiner. Drove about 20 miles on some twist back roads tonight and so far I'm quite impressed with the way it's tuned from the factory. It doesn't have the immense power of the QV I traded but this implemention of the B58 is really good. My wife's car is a 22 X3 M40i and the power plant just seems a bit more eager in the Supra so far (obviously the weight difference is significant).
So, now I'll wait and see what's up with the G87 and go from there. Weird to all of the sudden be a Supra guy... But it is a BMW Supra after all, so maybe not that weird. |

I'm away for the weekend but will post pics when I get back.
As far as the comments go on the M240i, I likely would have considered it if I could have found one to test drive. I don't need a backseat though, so thought the Supra would be a fun change of pace for a bit. I went in eyes wide open understanding some the the downsides, but it should be fun for a while until I go G80 or G87. |
