That's such a slim margin considering the power difference and having AWD it should do better. Goes to show you how good the GT4 is and how far BMW has come with the M3/4

Edit: is that an AWD or RWD? Either way I think it's solid

LoL at the first few replies.

A win is a win isn't it? The darling of the motoring world Vs a bloated grocery getting 3 series evolution.

Nice.

But the GT4 is also $20,000 more expensive if you can buy it at msrp so…

Point is, for a 4 seat practical cheaper car that's damn impressive

It was the RWD version.

I had a G80 AWD and sold it recently for a Boxster GTS. I also have a Boxster Spyder on order. I felt the G80 just wasn't engaging or fun and left me always wanting more. I out ~8650 miles on it too.

I think its more impressive that a car in which the core base is a 2 door version of a fancy grocery getter and were here now vs a bespoke, Mid engine rwd chassis from the ground up designed for this.

Yes and now, the power difference definitely helps here and the chassis is good but it's not a drivers car per say. I loved all of my BMW's I've had over the years for the record

This is more of a rectangle than a track, where the engine is more important than the chassis and in this case the difference in straight-line performance is huge (also look at the E63 AMG's time), on real tracks where you really have to drive things were different.
Great performance for the M4 though.

I'm curious about the circuit. Apparently long high speed sections are present given the chubby E-series time.

Depends on the circuit. Both these cars are great, I am just happy they are around, the EVs are coming.

How'd you manage to get a build slot for a Spyder??

This isn't the first time the G8x has beaten the GT4 around a track and it's not even the XDrive.

Different tracks will favor different drivetrains and chassis configurations.

With that said, I'm sure the GT4 has superior driving dynamics and is more engaging to drive.

I agree. My title was edited by moderators...

Exactly. Even in the AM&S/SA supertest, the RWD M4 was slightly faster than the GT4 (7:32 vs 7:31).

M3 AWD Daily practical GT road car, all weather, all year, fast as hell car that you can also take to the track and can hang with the big dogs. Simple cheap tune and intake and DP and you have 10 sec rocket. That you can remote start from your app with heated/ventilated seats and steering wheel.

GT4 is a track car that you can drive on public roads. GT4 have horrible daily drivability and harsh suspension and none of the other creature comforts.

The fact that M3 is anywhere near GT4 is a remarkable thing. If you want a weekend and track car get the Porsche. If you need a car for mainly the roads

I would assume the xDrive would be even faster, but this is also promising for the new M2 coming out. That should shave some time off this RWD lap as well.

Impressive

Seriously 99.9% of the buyer here can feel the 0.1 sec between these cars on the track.

99.99% will feel the Torque/speed of the M3/4 X drive launching. On street with less than perfect tarmac the GT4 is much slower and can't even hold a candle to a stock M3/4 and would disappear with a stage 1 tune M3/4 X drive.

If you live on the tail of the dragon or between the carved canyons you will appreciate the superior handling of the Porsche. If you live like me in the Midwest with straight roads the handling is wasted on your drive and you will miss the Torque of that Rocket.
