Porsche does it with their GT cars and Turbo models. Do we need a Turbo Macan or Cayanne? I don't, but someone might, and their SUVs are their bread and butter. They need those sales to keep making 911's and Caymans.
You never see Porsche make a bullshit commercial that says 'Im GT' nor do you see them put the GT logo on every car trim they have. Yes they build the SUV and EV for the broader market but they still focus on their enthusiast base (their true motorsport customer base). They worked on the core DNA of performance driving by coming out with more limited variants of their sport cars that are race/or touring oriented like the GTS, or the T or the RS. Get the difference?

BMW decided to sell out their Motorsport for more money, they didn't have to go that route at all. They could have kept the M brand focused on its enthusiast market instead they pimped out the M to everyone on that commercial and woke it up.

The reason I bought M cars is not because of an image the marketing department makes. No, I own an M car because of the way they drive. The cars performance, also their styling.

I was really disappointed in the video.

It sounds like Porsche should learn from BMW, as M is way more successful and recognizable as a brand than GT.

Porsche keeps the GT brand more exclusive on purpose, that’s by design. That’s why they sell at $100k over sticker, and keep their values so well. Porsche keeps the GT models limited in production numbers not because of supply chain issues, but to create desirability.

You stop someone in the street and tell them you drive an M car, they’ll shrug their shoulders.

I’m not saying I’d necessarily buy a GT Porsche, there are plenty of drawbacks to them. But their brand strategy has always worked.

Many of those same people will just shrug their shoulders if you told them you drive a Porsche. I don't think choosing a car based on what you think other people will believe is cool is very wise. People are self-centered and focused on their own lives... nobody truly cares what you're driving (except maybe young boys).

I was answering a comment about brand awareness. Not about life values.

So GT is to Porsche as M is to BMW? If that's the case, even being a car guy I didn't know that. Although admittedly I'm not that into Porsches. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have one, but their prices become stupid really quickly when you start adding basic options like seats and windows.

By this logic, since Toyota is the most successful (by value) and recognizable car brand in the world, then BMW should follow Toyota.

Oh but wait... since BMW's are driving softer with numb steering & more road isolation with each generation, it is in fact already following Toyota.

So funny!
No, that's not by that logic.
Toyota's and BMW's positioning are completely different.

Well, not really. But I'm just following the logic of the post I quoted.
