I attended this event last year and it was amazing. Looks like everything is a paid option for this year.

My wife and I attended the half day last year at Laguna Seca and it was a hoot. Actual on track laps were in the G80 and F90. Would absolutely do that again. I put my order in for my g82 like an hour after that lol

I signed up for a half day. Luckily, there is one about an hour and a half from me.

Are you doing laps during the one-one coaching or just riding as a passenger?

I've attended one of these. If you've never tracked before, this is an excellent way to dip your toe in high performance driving and get a small taste of the M School they offer at the BMW Performance Centers.

The autocross is fun and the lead follow will get your adrenaline pumping if you explore the limits and the instructor feels you are progressing. They will go as fast as they feel you are capable of.

The drag race, however, is largely a waste of time from a learning perspective unless you count the box at then end where you have to stop the car within the box for your time to count.

For the price it isn't bad since you aren't buying your own tires and you are getting decent instruction. I'd call this an intro to a beginner's course. For anyone who really wants to develop as a driver, though, the M School is the way to go. You will leave M School at about an intermediate level depending on how much you are willing to soak up and respond to the course.

For anyone who already has some track days under their belt, $500 for a half day is a bit steep since you can get a full day racing your own car at a world class track like Laguna Seca for around that price, albeit without instruction, but with much more seat time.

Talking Plan to compare and advise

Intend to do at least one M track day and plan to write about it.

Am still dithering on the M Driver's Package, which includes a track day package but will buy at least one track school event even if I do not get that. Am waiting on an ordered '22 M4Cx, just went back to status 112, Scheduled for Production for the 3rd time and am now set for build week 20.

For context, am an ex-MBZ fan-boy that grew up around Indy and Midget race tracks where my father was a mechanic.

Did the Russell Racing School High Performance Course in my own '01 CLK55 AMG at Infineon / Sears Point raceway. I do not remember any BMWs but there doubtless were some. In competitive lead-follow type events I was paired first with a Viper driven by a knuckle-head who had too much power and too little control. He spun out twice trying to match me in the twisty bits before the instructors paired him instead with a Corvette so "nothing bad would happen." I was then paired with a Lexus SC430, which was close to my suspension but not at all my power. The overall theme was to learn high performance driving in our own cars, with a lot of street safety content, and I learned a lot. Highly recommended class.

I later managed to get onto the invite list (both luck and hard work) for the AMG Challenge, as it was literally named back then. This was and its current AMG Driving Academy equivalent appears to be similar to the M school. I attended 5 Challenge events in 2006-2008. These were all day events in factory cars of every current AMG model. These included 3 standard and 2 advanced events. The standard (basic) ones were more fun (e.g., learn more, no stupid questions, less ego; no Beverly Hills plastic surgeons having a prissy fit when they get a 'cone killer award' in autocross and they thought they were advanced drivers because their everyday ride is an S600).

These ran $1,200-$1,400 but some years the manufacturer gave out vouchers for the price that were applicable to any MBZ dealership new purchase (not just AMG). The formats changed slightly every year but always included road course, autocross, and wet skid pad. If the track had high speed capability, we were asked to not exceed 155 mph but the instructors were not so limited and 175 mph hot laps in SLRs and SL600s were provided for "instructional purposes." FYI, a lot of the instructors were professional or ex- drivers who instructed at events for multiple manufactures (but were not supposed to say so, and absolutely not to name what they drove regularly).

Many tracks were available but I only attended west coast events. At first this meant California Speedway (now Auto Club Speedway) in Fontana, east of Los Angeles. It has a big oval that for some events was used as that and for others was combined with the road course section. During the last event there (2007) two bozos (everything about them reeked of bad news) 'kissed the wall' at 130 mph in an E63 on their first set of big oval laps. This appears to be why the California event was moved in 2008 to Thunderhill Raceway, north of Sacramento. Maximum speeds there were a lot less and I am sure I never topped 125, but it was still a fun event and the track had elevation changes which I had not experienced.

Fast forward to 2018, my new '18 C63s came with a free day at the AMG Driving Academy. This was good because I got to drive the full range of AMGs at Lagona Seca Raceway but it sucked because of what such events had become. E.g, an expensively catered semi-sales event where many of the other participants had bought AMG's because they could and only came because the event was free to them. The first half of the day the instructors spent babying things down for idiots that should not be on any roadway, until half the class dropped out (with a few attendees willing to sell their AMGs parked out in the parking lot on the spot because they were now scared of their cars capabilities -- go home to Hollywood Blvd. or Lombard St., where nothing is posted over 35 mph; please do not try canyon carving above Malibu or drive Hyw 2 above Pasadena; an early Sunday morning (Century Club time slot) drive on route 84 to La Honda, above Palo Alto, would be a traumatic and seat wetting event for such people).

Anyway, happy to be here. BMW, please give me the keys to my new car so I can start to say good things about it.

These are fun if you are new to the track or want to actually drive a G8x before ordering since you can't get test drives anymore. If you have a car just take it to a HPDE (I recommend BMWCCA) where you will have an instructor (usually in-car). The entry cost will be a lot less but of course you are using your own car and paying for wear on brakes/tires etc.

Drive it like you stole it

I agree with driving a manufacturer or track owned car at events if possible. The instructor's know them best and risking your own hardware is not "prudent."

At the Russell event described above I warped my front break disks by pulling over to think through what I was doing wrong on entering one turn and leaving my foot on the breaks ($1,800 repair later). Also, the knuckle-head that spun out twice was luckily following me both times. If he had been in front, "bad things" might have happened to my car (on wait list 17 months to get it).

Russell had track prep'ed Mustangs to lease and I would pay the extra if I wanted to take such a class again.

I've had cars spin in front of me dozens of times. In most cases it's not difficult to avoid hitting a spinning car in front of you for the simple reason that, in most cases, you can stop at a shorter distance than them.

Tires can only deal with one force at 100%. Anything more and it has to distribute it's gripping ability. Their tires are dealing with multiple forces, spinning and stoping, while your tires are only going to deal with one, braking. So as long as you have good situational awareness, you merely have to brake in a straighter line to avoid a spinning car.

However, there are some cases where avoiding a spinning car is difficult:

There is debris on the track that increases your stopping distance

The spinning car has sticky enough tires and a light enough chassis to make their stopping distance significantly shorter even while spinning

There is oil, water, or fluid on the track

Your tires have already overheated

Your brakes have already overheated

Your brake fluid has boiled

Your brakes fail

They hit another object that decreases their speed enough to make their stopping distance shorter than yours even while spinning.

They were going a significantly slower speed when they started the spin compared to your speed.

As a former racing driver, the only appeal this has for me is to be able to thrash someones else's car and if I happen to crash, I assume I am not going to have to pay for the damage.? Also, I always enjoy perspectives and tips from instructors.

I'm curious what cars they will have. I did it just pre-G8x launch and they did drag races in the X vehicles, Autocross in the M2 and the big track in M5 and M8's. While it would be interesting to drive "my car" on the track I'd also perhaps more love to try the M5's and 8's.

last 2 events has been M3/M5 on track (M2 as well during the full day). M8 hasn't been used since 2020 I think at M Track Days

Yea, that would be the other side of the interest. I really want to drive the M5 and 8, but it would be interesting to see how my car is on the track. Although now that I have an M8 on order I want to drive that on the track again.

Drove M4 comp (rwd), M5 CS, M8 on track and the X*Ms in straight line drags which was OK but not really my thing.

Yea, I'm not much of an SUV drag racer, but it was pretty impressive what they could do.

Are you sure that it was a M5cs and not a M5c?
