Winter driving
I’m sure there is a sub somewhere on here addressing this, but cannot find exactly what I’m looking for.
Do any G80x drivers on here daily their car in the winter. I live in northern Michigan, so I do mean real winters. If so, even though the car is AWD, how do the pirellis handle these conditions? Also concerned about the ice clumps that form behind tires inside wheel housing area and the front splitter being damaged by these same type of clumps left on roadways from time to time. Love to hear people experiences, if any, with these things Thanks |

Get actual winter tires on another set of wheels and you should be fine. Road salt and other thing… well, that’s going to be wear and tear no matter what car you drive. Wash it off on regular intervals if you can to help that issue. Don’t forget the undercarriage and wheel wells and all the suspension components.

The priellis get really hard less than 40 degrees F. If you’re really careful you can do it with the xdrive, but I wouldn’t, it’s sketchy and takes the enjoyment out of driving the car.
I replaced the Ps with all season Continental DWS06+ and they and the car are now a great winter daily. Drove in -10F temp and snow last weekend and felt confident in the car. |

Put winter tires and drive year round. I did have a hard time in the storm we got last weekend with winter tires on their last leg. Otherwise it's been a champ in the snow esp. for RWD.
Do not bother to drive in the snow with the summers, take it from experience.

I drive year round. I have a set of wheels with Michelin Aplin 5S that I switch onto the car for winter. X drive and winter tires do great. Sometimes too well when I’m try to get a little squirrely. Trying to roll with the P’s is winter is not a good idea though.

I haven't heard anyone complaining but just seems to me that the M cars would have too much power for winter roads. Does the DSC and AWD work that well to avoid spinning out with a little too much throttle?

As for the original question, driving in northern Michigan on performance summer tires in winter is a good idea if you want to support your local collision repair shops. AWD does nothing to help you stop. |

Seriously, this car is not some peaky / boosty / hard to manage car. Just because it has over 500 HP doesn't mean you need to deploy it. Keep it in efficient and just use restraint. |

I'm not driving the M3 in the snow because I don't need to and want to keep it clean/nice. But I would have no qualms whatsoever about doing so. |

If u have an alternate car/SUV to use when there is a big snow storm, then go with All Seasons on the M3 and u cna drive comfortably in 1-2 inches of snow or slushy roads as long as u don’t try and drive like a maniac. If u need a DD come what may and u only have a M3, then it’s better to get a separate winter wheel set and use that for the Michigan winters. I took mine out today. About 2 inches of snow. I have DWS on mine and was a little slippery when the tires were cold but once it warmed up they handled beautifully. Don’t worry about the snow in the wheel well. Whenever u park the car just kick them and they will fall off. Just don’t leave them there to freeze overnight. If u don’t mind the massive road salt stains, go for it. I almost wanted to push the limits of the car today when the tires warmed up and the roads dried out but my head overruled my stupidity lol. Good luck

I am running Vredstein Wintrac Pros on dedicated wheels. 275/35/19 square.
The car is very capable on snow or ice with two exceptions. One is the depth of snow. Anything much over 6" or 8" will cause the car to plow. This is not good. The second is the big chunks of ice that fall out of the wheel wells of trucks. It would be very easy for one of these to damage the front lip or even the oil cooler. On the plus side, the car with its rear drive bias, is amazingly easy to drift around switchbacks on icy roads. Big fun! |

Is this a serious question?
You're driving a high-end sports car and want to avoid putting on the correct winter tires? Why? |

UGG, road salt! You are bringing tears to my eyes. All I can think about is all the bare aluminum under the car oxidizing and looking like a 15 year old automatic transmission that came from the scrap yard.

I took my G83 out in 6 inches of snow on Pilot Sport 4 all seasons and it took effort to induce spin and fish tail. Even in 2WD mode the car has remarkable grip.

I have an M4Cx and drive on pilot sport all season 4’s. I live in Cleveland and have driven on snow and ice many many times. Never had any issues whatsoever. We just had a pretty good snow of 5-8 inches. I was making it up and down unplowed streets pretty easily as long as I was easy on the gas and went slow and steady.
I used to have a RWD f80 and ran dedicated winter/summer tires. Never again. Winter tires are meant to be driven on snow. If you’re driving around on just dry but cold pavement they wear down so fast. For example I purchased my first set of snow tires in early November. By April they were absolutely toast because 98% of my driving was just on cold pavement. Never drove on them hard, just normal daily driving and when I measured them in April the fronts were 2-3mm and rears were barely 1-2. All seasons in my opinion work great if you aren’t tracking the car. If you are, then maybe 2 sets of wheels are the better choice. |

I'm a bit sceptical of the claim that an ultra high performance all season tire like Michelin PS4 can be driven comfortably in six inches of snow. As the video below demonstrates (start watching at the 8:45 second mark), those tires are pretty useless even on compacted snow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm6342C4CRo |
